I have his parents names and his wife Comfort Ann Hines. I was wanting a bit more info about him as I'm doing my father's geneaology who is turning 90 next month and would love to give him his family history as he knows very little.
Much apprecited indeed and look forward to hearing from you

Hello again: According to my notes, we are talking about the same Archimedes George Chambers of Hanover, Jamaica (1795-1842)! His parents were Jacob Chambers and Elizabeth George (he gets his name from his mother's paternal branch).
I have been researching these "Hanover" Chambers for a few years now. My interest in Archimedes stems from the research on my paternal line. We believe that we descend from his son, Charles. Archimedes had several children, do you know which one you descend from? He also had a son previous to his marriage to Comfort Ann Hine.

Hi there, thank you for your reply. How awesome to know you are definitely a descendant of Archimedes George. I stem from one of his sons...Frederic Richard. Frederic Richard is my paternal great grandfather who emigrated and settled in Fiji..yes I too have been researching for some years now and didn't even know these sites were available. No I didn't know he (Archimedes) had another child...wow!
I have tried researching on family info that had said the Chambers were from Dumfries. I found there was a Dumfries plantation but no trace of Chambers name in there. Did you have any idea if this is valid or not?
Thank you for Elizabeth's maiden name George. I had wondered why one of the girls names (Anne Elizabeth George) has George in there as well. I have managed to make contact with one of Mary Cornelia's descendants who like me and yourself have been on the family history journey.
I managed to find a newspaper article dated 1776 of a Mr Chambers of Hanover who's slave had attempted to kill his master. It doesn't state which Chambers but it does give a glimpse of what life would've been like for both sides.

Thank you for making contact, I look forward to strengthening our connections back to the ancestor from whom we both stem...you through Charles Robert and me through Frederic Richard.

Can I ask which country you live in? Like I mentioned Frederic Richard emigrated to Fiji when he was about 13/14 yrs old as a ships mate. All of his children were born in Fiji and so were most of his grandchildren. My father was born in Fiji but emigrated to New Zealand when he was 25 and as I wrote in an earlier email, he is celebrating his 90th next month.
Kindest regards
your distant, but still a cousin
Chris

Hello new cousin-wow!

I'll start with elaborating on items in your last response.

1) Yes, Archimedes's first child was William Reckord Chambers by Elsie Evans in Lucea, Hanover,Jamaica. He was christened 15 Mar 1826, born the previous year (ref: FamilySearch.org, FHL Film 1291711- Parish Register Vol 1, p173, line #6 Hint if you search for him on Familysearch.org don't lock the spelling of the middle name- it was transcribed as Rickard!). Archimedes was married later in 1826 to Comfort Ann Hine. Did you get the names of the other nine children including Frederick from your correspondence with one of Mary Cornelia's descendants? If not let me know (It's a small world, for I also have been in touch with a descendant of Mary Cornelia's!)

2) I have also heard the story that these original Hanover Chambers were from Scotland, but I have not found anything as of yet to confirm that but I'm still looking. I believe I have come up with a plausible theory for Archimedes's ancestry connecting him back to one Alexander Chambers of Hanover, Jamaica who died in ~1741. But I haven't gone back further due to the the lack of early records and unfortunately the early Hanover Parish register has a big hole in it for the years 1726 to ~1750 which as you well guessed is critical for our Chambers research (the actual 'gap' years for the Chambers surname is roughly twentyone years, an entire generation in those times. So other sources have to be looked at.

3) The surname 'George' also appears in the name of one of Archimedes's sons Thomas George Chambers. I am currently researching his mother's lineage, the George family because a- I'm curious as to where the name Archimedes comes from- right now it's looking like Elizabeth's grandfather.

4) The 1776 newspaper article of a Mr Chambers of Hanover whose slave attempted to kill him. That was Edward Chambers, a very early relation of Archimedes. You can read more about that on JamaicanFamilySearch.com On the opening page scroll down to the section "Slaves and Slavery in Jamaica" and click on the Slaves and Slavery" link, then on that page scroll down to the section "1776 Slave Uprising" section and click on that link. There's more background material there. JFS is an great source of general information.

5) My family also had bits & pieces of passed down information- WRITE it all down- for while those bits are probably not 100% accurate, they are clues.

Archimedes George CHAMBERS & Family

Hi Kirihi/Chris & Chamres. Greetings from British Columbia on the west coast of Canada.

I am going to guess that ‘Chamres’ is Pamela. But maybe not ….

I am also researching these families. Archimedes George CHAMBERS and Comfort Ann HINE are my wife’s GGG Grandparents. She is a descendent of their daughter Mary Cornelia CHAMBERS and Samuel Morris DAVIS.

Thanks for sharing some of your research. I will try to add to your various blogs to date. To my knowledge, Archimedes & Comfort Ann had 10 children: Ann Elizabeth George, Charles Robert, Sarah Downer, Thomas George, Cargill William, Mary Cornelia, James Gordon (#1), James Gordon (#2), Allen Kentish and Frederick Richard. I have birth or baptism documentation for all, as well as the parents. I suspect that James Gordon #1 died shortly after his birth, since #2 was born about 2 years later, although I haven’t yet found a burial for him.

We think that Mary Cornelia’s husband Samuel Morris DAVIS was previously married to her older sister Ann Elizabeth George.

Archimedes had an older sister Elizabeth and a younger brother Thomas George.

Archimedes’ son Allen Kentish’s second name is interesting to us because the ‘Kentish’ continues to show up in the DAVIS family a few generations later. We don’t have any info about the origins of the Kentish name, although it can still be found in Jamaica.

I only have birth info for Charles Robert and Frederic Richard. Anything you can fill in for them will be gratefully received.

I can be reached by email to billclayton@shaw.ca

Wow hi there Bill from New Zealand. Great to make contact with you. I have made contact with another descendant of Mary Cornelia...Bev and she is in Canada. Are you Bev's husband?
Anyway lovely to make contact with you. Our family didn't even know that Frederic Richard had brothers and sisters until this year. Family stories were handed down but they were a bit sketchy as to definite information and I have just found the valuable sites familysearch and this site.

All of that aside, we only have one family photo of Frederic Richard with his grandchildren. I can't help with any information regarding Mary Cornelia sorry. Thank you for responding, I am absolutely stoked with just the fact of making contact with distant family members...no pun intended there :)
Kindest regards to you, my distant cousin and your family.

Hi Chris

Bev is probably my wife's first cousin in Ontario. Can you fill in your line back to Archimedes so I can include it in my data base. I use Reunion on my Mac to keep track of all the family connections

Your photo of Frederic Richard must be one of the earliest family photos. We have on of Mary Cornelia, but nobody before that in this family.

I am working with another Chambers member in the US to work out as many details as we can.

Hi Kirihi, I’m Danielle and I’ve been researching my family’s ancestry starting with my fathers side. He carries the last name Chambers and there family resides in Jamaica. I haven’t confirmed with him but I will try to get my great grandfathers name to confirm that are trees align. It’s very hard to find records on slaves purchased overseas so any info about them would be very helpful. Thanks.
