Alexander James 'Sandy' Ferguson

emigrated 1 Feb 1831 aged 28 on the 'Drummore' with wife Elizabeth & 2 sons, Thomas aged 4 & James aged 3. He was an indentured servant to Lewis Yule. A son, Robert, was born at sea but died of convulsions and was buried at sea.
Alex was a Guildford blacksmith who, with his family, first established themselves at Guildford. When times got tough he moved to the Canning and later moved to the Middle Swan, living on the site that became the Swan Boys Orphanage, Swanleigh. Later they shifted to Newcastle (later Toodyay) and built a mud brick house in the late 1840's on Water's property 'Barn Elms'. Houses were usually of rammed earth with earthen floors and a detached kitchen. Both gentry and labourers built their houses of rammed earth because of the shortage of bricks and skilled tradesmen. Brick did not come into general use until the 1850s. Rooves were usually thatched with rushes, straw, blackboy tops or paperbark. When it was found that thatch was highly flammable, she-oak shingles were more commonly used. The Georgian tradition of building was still strong in England. The colonial builders followed the style, but modified it to suit the climate by surrounding buildings with a verandah. Sandy set up his Blacksmith shop and built beside a track that crossed the Toodyay Brook and it was there that Bishop Salvado bought his plough shares to be sharpened. He & Christina and their 9 children moved to Newcastle, later named Toodyay and leased 'Barn Elms' from Robert Waters. By 1848 the population had was 95. The establishment of the Guildford Convict Depot in 1851 had a dramatic effect on the size and prosperity of the town. By Dec 1859 the population was 369, plus 59 convicts.
Three of their sons, Thomas, Alex & James, married three daughters of Henry John Morley & Sarah Bassett, of Chittering, who had come from Brighton, Sussex, in the Ship "Lotus".

Toodyay Herald, 17 July 1942 ROAD FATALITY The death occurred at the Hollywood Military Hospital on Tuesday of Pte Geoffrey Thomas Ferguson, following a road accident in which he was involved on Monday, 12th inst., at Redcliffe. Deceased, who was aged twenty-seven, had lived all his life in the Toodyay district and his sudden untimely demise has been learned of with profound regret throughout the district. The late Pte Ferguson, who was serving with the A.M.F., was riding a motor cycle towards Perth on Monday night with Pte Claude Underwood on the pillion and when passing through Redcliffe, they collided with an Air Force truck at the junction of a side street. Pte Underwood sustained only lacerations to the head, but Pte Ferguson received a fractured base of the scull and a fractured leg. After being attended by a doctor the injured men were removed to hospital. Shortly after admission Ferguson's name was placed on the dangerously ill list. Constable Kennedy, of the Guildford police, attended at the scene. Ferguson passed away in the hospital in the early hours of the morning. The late young man was the son of Mrs Ada Ferguson and the late Mr Robert Ferguson, of Dewar's Pool and leaves to mourn their loss a young widow (formerly Miss Pat Lawler), as well as five brothers and two sisters: Sybil (Mrs A. Donegan), Harold, Perry, Rene (Mrs W. Jarratt), Reg (A.I.F., reported missing in Malaya), Cecil (10th Reconnaissance Regiment) and Oliver.
THE INQUEST at the conclusion of an inquest into the death of Geoffrey Thomas Ferguson (27), a soldier and native of Toodyay, held in the City Watchhouse yesterday, the Acting-Coroner (Mr J. H. Railton, JP) found that Ferguson died at Hollywood Military Hospital on July 13 through injuries received when a motor cycle he was riding collided with a RAAF motor waggon at the corner of the Great Eastern-highway and Fauntleroy avenue, Redcliffe, on the same day. Evidence was given that as Ferguson, travelling south along the highway, drew near Fauntleroy-avenue, a RAAP motor waggon, driven by Leading Airman Ernest George Thompson, came out of the avenue intending to turn north and proceed in the opposite direction to that of the cyclist. The vehicles collided and Ferguson was fatally injured. Medical evidence stated that the cause of death was lacerations to the brain and to the right lung. There were multiple other injuries. Sgt J. Mills assisted the Acting Coroner and Captain N. P. Lappin appeared for the Department of the Army.
