FINGZIES, James and Isabella (born ARNOTT)

Journal by janfamily

They lived in Kinnesswood, a smallish village in Kinross-shire, Scotland in the mid-19th century. He was born 1825 – the son of Elizabeth Ralph and John Fingzies, and was a hand-loom weaver (both sets of parents were too), as many in the parish of Portmoak were.

With a family name like his, James must be related to Alexander and Robert Fingzies who developed some of the housing 'colonies' in Edinburgh in Victorian times – housing for working people, especially in Leith (eg see Fingzies Place near Leith Links).

I'd love to establish the connection between James and Alexander F. Cousins maybe? Anyone know about them by chance?

On another angle, can I assume hand-loom weavers generally worked 'at home' and that this may have been an occupation Isabella was also involved with? I'm interested to know how the weaving 'industry' operated for the people involved. How did village workers get the raw material for linen / cotton / wool? Did someone 'own' their work, provide materials and pay them, or were they 'in business' for themselves and have a market somewhere? Thanks

I can give you some information. I am trying to put info on a tree under ancestry cos I have some old photos of the family. I do know the line finished when Bella died in the nineties as she was the last living one. Bella had 3 brothers and in the early days her mother and aunt ran everything. There were no men on the scene. Also sometimes they went under the name of dods.

Hello Milliebee. I'm wondering who your Bella is, and the aunts you mention? What did they 'run'? Can you give me more info? Do you have a public tree on Ancestry that I could see your photos on? I have a fairly substantial tree of Fingzies now [James and Isabella were my great great grandparents and my mother had it as part of her name]. Although J and I's branch didn't extend the name far, I think Alexander's offspring did so. I'm now fairly sure he and James were cousins. Dods name came into family through Alexr's youngest brother Robert. I look forward to hearing what you've learned! Thanks
