Fitzpatricks of Ballyglass, parish of Doora, County Clare

Query by DaleP

James Fitzpatrick and his wife Maria Commane (or Mary Hurley) are found in Ballyglass, Doora n the 1820s. James and most of the children emigrated to Australia in 1849. One son Matthew, remained behind with his wife and family. Would love information on Matthew & family. I have information on the Australian portion of the family if others are interested.

There are absolutely heaps of Australian descendants. Soon after arriviing, James purchased farming land and a hotel in South Australia. When he died in 1874, one of his sons, Patrick (and Patrick's wife Margaret) took over the hotel. Patrick (my ancestor) had married Margaret Nixon in Tulla in 1848, prior to emigrating.

James' family were:
Patrick c1820 = Margaret Nixon 1848
Michael 1822 unmarried
Bridget 1824 = Samuel Williams 20 9 1846 at Quin
Mary 26.3.1827 = Martin Meaney 16.8.1851
Catherine 9.11.1828 = (1) Richard Matthews (2) Robert Thomas
James 21.9.1830 - Margaret Kenihan 18.5.1863
George 14.9.1834 died young?
Ann 1834 - Michael O'Hehir 17.4.1853
Ellen 14.4.1836 = John Higgins
John 15.7.1838 died young?
Matthew - married and remained in Ireland.

James' wife, Maria Commane (or Mary Hurley) did not emigrate, nor did the youngest son, George. Presumably they died prior to 1849. Matthew is the only one who appears to have remained in Ireland.

Their children were Michael George, born 1845
Mary Jane 29.3.1849. (married John Hogan Apr 1877 These 2 came to Australia with their parents. the rest were born in SA.
Anne 25.9.1851 = Frederick Crowder 17.3.1877
Ellen 27.4.1854. Died of consumption 3.7.1875. I have a sketch she did in 1869.
Margaret 24.6.1856 - Thomas Donaldson 1877
James Andrew 12.9.1860 = Kate Williams 19.5.1882
Emma Bridget 5.4.1863 - William George Breton 23.7.1903
John Patrick 26.5.1867 - Bridget Theresa WAlsh 18.9.1901. John was my g-grandfather, however he did not marry my g-grandmother.

This is just a portion of the information I have. Is this part of your family? Are you in Australia? Would love to hear more from you.
