FRITZ REUTER into WELLINGTON 1876
the FRITZ REUTER left Hamburg, Germany 11 April 1876 and took 110 days to arrive in Wellington, New Zealand, on 4 August 1876. Captain Peyn in command.
There was nearly 420 'souls' (as opposed to immigrants) on board, equal to 420 statue adults.
More than 260 'Poles' made up half of the 'souls', the largest number of Poles who had arrived in the colony at any one time. Scandinavians, Germans and Italians made up the balance. Immigration officials would typically have counted the Fritz Reuter passengers as 'statute adults' but immigration officials did not count them this time. These 'foreigners' had arrived apparently against the express order of the colonial government, a government that had bluntly stopped 'foreign' immigration.
The day after they arrived in Wellington the local paper, the Evening Post, missing (or ignoring) the fact that all settlers in NZ were foreign immigrants, bluntly wrote ..
. . She brings no Government immigrants but nearly 500 souls on board, equal to 420 statute adults, who were ready to come out when orders were given to discontinue the shipment of foreign immigrants. They were therefore forwarded independently of the Government and probably will be landed on Monday next. Their general health has been excellent during the voyage. Eleven deaths occurred, viz., 1 adult, 4 children, and 6 infants under 12 months old. She is consigned to Messrs Krull and Co.

* A must read if you are researching the early Polish settlers from the Fritz Reuter. It has been very difficult to find anything on a passenger list, apparently because it was not considered an 'immigrant ship'.

ARRIVAL OF THE FRITZ REUTER
. . .The long-expected German ship Fritz Reuter, from Hamburg, arrived in this port last evening, after a somewhat protracted passage of 110 days. She left Hamburg on 16th April, and experienced generally fine weather during the voyage. On the Fritz Reuter being signaled at the Heads, Captain Fairchild, knowing that all the pilots were on board the various other vessels of which a perfect fleet came in during the afternoon, went out with the Luna to show the way in, but the ship stood in safely, without assistance, and anchored in the stream.
New Zealand Herald, 8 Aug 1876
CASE OF THE GERMAN IMMIGRANTS
. . .Much delay and inconvenience have occurred respecting the 420 German immigrants who arrived a few days ago per Fritz Reuter. The Government are unable to recognise them as Government immigrants, but, at the request of the German Consul, Mr Krull, they have consented to receive them in the depot and will assist the Consul in their location and maintenance. They will be landed to-morrow. It appears that in 1874, Dr Featherston took over Slomin's contract with the Queensland Government for the supply of free immigrants. Dr Featherston further engaged with a Mr Kirchener, who was acting as agent for the New Zealand Government, that on the completion of the said contract within the specified time he (Kirchener) should send out 4000 more free immigrants, the remuneration to be £1 per head. This latter arrangement was entirely contingent on the Queensland contract being carried out in contract time - viz., 14th November. This was not done. Subsequently, instructions were received by the Agent-General from New Zealand to stop all further free Continental immigration, and the several agents were advised accordingly; but they immediately professed to have promised a free passage to some 3000 persons, and to have engaged the necessary shipping. The Agent-General refused to accept such arrangement, and it turned out that no such agreements or promises had been made; in fact, it was subsequently admitted that the immigrants, per Fritz Reuter, constituted the entire number to whom free passages had been promised. The Agent-General demurred, however, to even these immigrants being sent out, alleging that it was done directly in opposition to his instructions. The question of who is to pay for their passages will have to be settled in Europe.

GERMAN IMMIGRATION TO THE MANAWATU-RANGITIKEI
. ... An abrupt cessation of immigration from the Continent in early 1876 came as a shock to the German emigration agent and shipping company. The situation was far worse, though, for hundreds of German emigrants (and other nationalities) who had been accepted for New Zealand, already given the required three months notice to employers and sold their possessions. The dilemma came to a head when the Prussian Government forced the agent and shipping company to send these emigrants to New Zealand anyway.
. . .. As a result, on 4 August 1876 the Fritz Reuter sailed into Port Nicholson with its unwanted cargo of over 500 passengers. The 7 August flurry of communication between F. A. Krull and the Immigration Department in Wellington, saw Krull reduced to virtually begging for their help to accommodate temporarily and feed this enormous number of people. The Minister of Immigration, albeit unwillingly, agreed to allow the most unfortunate to use its immigration barracks. He also agreed to provide a few days rations. As it happened, almost every immigrant fitted the Ministers criteria. In due course, a number of these people settled in Manawatu-Rangitikei (including Rongotea)
