3 December 1887 ... A very serious fire occurred here on Thursday last, when Mr Gardner Hunter's dwelling house and contents wee consumed. Mrs Hunter was alone at the time baking when some sparks must have been carried up the chimney and thence on to the roof as the fire originated there. That lady, with great presence of mind, endeavored to save a few things, but her hat catching fire caused her to beat a reteat beofre she could accomplish much. When assistance arrived she was found lying outside, thoroughly exhausted.
