Gaybba

Journal by Gaybbagrandson

My name is Daniel Brown,
My mothers maiden name is Kathleen Swan Gaybba, born in Montreal, Quebec Canada, daughter of William Gaybba.
William married Helen Downs Weir Boyle in 1925 in Montreal.
They had 5 children, Dianna, Anna (deceased), Richard(deceased drowned at a young age), Kathleen(my mom),
and Helen.
William Gaybba was my grandfather and I am 1 of Kathleen's 10 children.
My grandfather William met my grandmother on a ship coming to Canada.
My grandfather was always elusive about his past according to my mother. As a kid growing up in Canada I was always intrigued by my mothers maiden name.

My cousin Susan Pate has done some research as have my sisters Deborah and Shairn.

I believe my grandfathers father was William Eugene Gaybba, married to Marie Lawson of South Africa.
Could it be possible that William Eugene Gaybba, is the son of James, Matthew John, or William of Scotland
who arrived in South Africa in 1849 or 1850?
From what little information we can pry from our 82 year old mother apparently my grandfather was somewhat of a badboy.
I have looked on line and I believe that estelleg, mimsi, and brian, and I may be of the same Gaybba line but I have only started my research.
My grandfather had a sister who he loved her name was Dianne.
My aunts always tell me I look like a Gaybba......Oh course I take this as a compliment.
If you can provide further information on my ancestry I would be most grateful
Thank-you to Estelle, Mimsi and Brian for their valuable information.

Daniel

Dear Daniel,
I have had a response on Ancestry that may interest you. If I remember correctly, yoour grandfathers'mother was a Lawson, so I am also very interested in this the response I received :
My enquiry on Message Board :

Has anybody been able to find more info regarding the above family link? James Gaybba married a Lerm, and her sister married John William Grimes. At some stage the Grimes Family lived in Oudtshoorn (SA) and we are trying to find more info about where James originated from, and what happened to the Grimes family. Also trying to find a Lawson married in Wynberg, Cape Town to a Gaybba. Wynberg is now part of Cape Town, but in the 1800's was a farming community.

Received the following : Perhaps of value to the Gaybba's in Canada????

The Wilfred Maude Lawson you are looking for (b. 1/20/1919 in Glasgow Scotland) was my grandfather. He died on July 21, 2006. Shortly after leaving home, when he was in his late teens or early 20s, he legally changed his name to Steve MacLachlan Dow. Maclachlan was his mother's maiden name and Dow was his mother's first married name (before she married Wilfred Maude Lawson Sr.). He changed his name after a falling out with his father. I can give you any information you need on my Grandpa Steve (as I knew him) and his family. Just let me know.

Dear Daniel
I have just discovered some interesting names which MAY be linked to your prt of the family. I have been trying to find the Lawson/Gaybba link for some years,as you may well know and am wondering if the bit that I found is of any value and if I should continue searching.
Maria Susan Lawson born Cape of Good Hope 18/10/1894 to parents JAMES
LAWSON and Johanna Christina Windelina GREBE ( second record has an '
on the last e) Lawson. Perhaps the GGGfather died and she married
again? Or perhaps she is just a relative of them?
As we have thus far been unable to ascertain where James Gaybba originated from and wonder if his surname was changed/spelt incorrectly, this makes one wonder!
Best regards, Estelle Gaybba, South Africa estellegaybba@gmail.com
