21 July 1865 We regret to Have to record that Mr Frederick Ward Merriman died at his house at Parnell at ten o'clock yesterday morning, at the age of forty seven. Although the event caused a deep feeling of sorrow throughout the city when it became known, it could not have taken any one by surprise for it was well known that Mr Merriman's illness was of such a nature as almost to preclude any expectation of his recovery. This lingering and hopeless illness he bore with great patience from its commencement about four months ago till its fatal termination yesterday. No one was better known or more highly esteemed among the older colonists of Auckland than Mr Merriman. His great abilities as a lawyer caused him to be selected to discharge some of the most onerous duties in connection with the profession, while the frankness and honestly of his nature endeared him to all who enjoyed the privilege of his acquaintance. Mr Merriman, who was Born in Wiltshire, and educated at WInchester, came to Auckland in 1844, during Governor Fitroy's administration, when he commenced practice as a solicitor. In 1854 he was returned as member of the House of Representatives for the suburbs of Auckland, and was elected Chairman of Committees, the duties of which office he discharged till 1856 when he was succeeded by Mr Carleton. From 1856 till 1861, he was Provincial Law Officer, and since that time he has filled the office of Crown Solicitor. For several years he was also a member of the Provincial Council. Mr Merriman married Mrs Atkyns, the widow of Captain Atkyns, and leaves a family.
The funeral will take place to-day at three o'clock, and the procession will start from the residence of the deceased, at Parnell and proceed to the Cemetery at Symonds street. The members of the Auckland Masonic lodges will be present, as, no doubt, will be a large number of the citizens who have been on terms of friendship with the deceased
