Hi there, I'm a descendant of George Henry Bishop. The dates I have a slightly different from yours but I'm pretty sure it's the same guy. I'll happily send you all the info I have on the Bishop family. George's family came out to N.Z from Wiltshire England (his mum was Irish) on the ship the 'Chariot of Fame' in 1863. I just typed 'Bishop Soloman' out of curiosity and found your post and have just joined this website to write back to you. George Henry Bishop was born in Addington, Christchurch 28/3/1867. He married in 1887 and had 11 children (the youngest was my grand father). From what I can gather the relationship he had with Kauri Soloman was a de facto relationship and he died in Waimate North 1942. Also, my information says Kathleen was born in 1931. I hope you get this note and we can get in touch.

Hi to you both, I have just stumbled upon your posts while looking into my family tree. I am also a decendant of George Henry Bishop. Reading my Grand fathers (son of George Henry) diary I note that he visited Ohaeawai at least once and mentions Kauri Soloman. Keen to get in touch with you.

Hi Rose, my great grandfather George Henry Bishop married Eliza Coulter Donaldson in Ashburton on Oct 10th 1887. They had eleven children together, the oldest being my grandfather Fred. Eliza passed away in Nelson on 16th August 1954 at 9:12am. My records show that George Henry Bishop died on the 13th June 1942 at KeriKeri.

Hi Rosemary and Colin (and GroovyFunkyChick), I’ve just come across your posts. George Henry was my Great-Grandfather, his son John was my grandad. I live in Australia now but recently returned from NZ and visited Eliza’s (and her mother Nancy Coulter) Grave in Nelson. George Henry jnr is also on Eliza’s headstone, he was a Lance Corporal at Gallipoli, he died there from wounds sustained in the battle. He is buried there.

I found Kathleen (Aunty Kath) Bishop in about 1991 after writing a letter to their local Marae (Te Ahu Ahu) and was lucky enough to get to know her well, along with Uncle Charlie (Charles) Bishop. Peter died in his childhood, can’t remember how. Aunty Kath had three children, all of whom live around the Bay of Islands.

George Henry is buried at Waimate North. Kathleen was interred at Russell Cemetery. Uncle Charlie passed away several years ago.

I have some photos I’m happy to share and a copy of the Bishop family tree back to the 1600’s.

Oh wow! I've just re found this post after five years! Hello cuzzies, I'm Gabrielle aka GroovyFunkyChick! Hi Colin, Rose & Annaliese, so excited to meet you all via this thing. I'm such a ditz, I first chatted on this in 2017 whilst searching family tree stuff but opened an account with my 'fake' email address( I don't like being forced to give out my email address ) but I can't seem to log into this with my 'real' one. I've got no idea how I signed into this right now (tried multiple ways). The way I read this we are all certainly related. You're welcome to find me on Facebook under Gabrielle Bishop De Bruijn. I live in Hamilton, N.Z. Oh so buzzed to read your replies. That's amazing Annaliese that you thought to contact the Marae on te Ahi Ahu road. I'd love to hear all about Aunty Kath and see photos. The whole reason I re found this post was that my Husband and I went up North a few days ago and as we passed Waimate North I announced "My great grand father George Bishop was buried up here somewhere, I wish I could find him". We Googled a random cemetery (Anglican Church & cemetery on te Ahi Ahu road, no less). I said "this doesn't feel right, but I know he's around here somewhere". Next thing, I'm googling and I stumble across this post. I'm baffled but then realise it was own stupidity that I joined up on an account I can't access. If you guys see this (and I'm sure you're humans and not robots) you can also write to my email address kiwichick zero zero one at hotmail dot com. Can't wait to reconnect with some rallies from a side I don't know much about. I know my father has a great photo of his dad Hugh with his older brother Fred. Looking forward to 'meeting' you!- Gabrielle
