George Olley of Suffolk, England born near Stanton 1797(?)
This man is my great great great grandfather and also a brick wall. He entered North America about 1830 some say with his infant son, John, but there is no record of passenger list, ship, not mentioned in Ellis Island, St. Albans, or other eastern ports in USA or even Canadian. The only certified record of him is his US Naturalization Record dated 1844 which he signed with his X mark. So we know he was illiterate. He settled in Great Bend, Wilna, Jefferson county, New York state.
There are many stories written about him in newspapers when he died in 1907 in NY State. These are mostly false accounts. The statements are no historically accurate. I have an inkling that Old George was a deceptive man. There are claims his parents died when he was young and his grand-sire (supposedly a shepherd)raised him. By using internet only at this point I have not been able to find any record of who his parents were and I have been searching since year 2000.
I found marriage records for him and his first wife, Barbara Ann Carman, and I located her descendants on Ancestry.com. The two married in South Lopham, Norfolkshire, England, in 1829 and shortly thereafter bore a son, John, who was baptized in 1831. What ever happened to his first wife, Barbara Ann, is unknown. But the claim he brought his first born to the New World with him his entrance into N. America could not have happened in 1830. John was not yet born then according to baptismal records.
I have to end here for now and take it back up later.
