GOSS in Staffordshire, England

Journal by tggoss

James GOSS was located in Staffordshire, England he is living with his family of wife and three boys in 1881 he was a games keeper he had been born in Staffordshire in 1837 but in another area, it seems his father Thomas was also a games keeper which therefore cause them to move around and not even in the same county therefore making the location of his fathers birth even more confounding. They immigrated to Canada shortly after as one son was born in England, shortly after the census but before they came to Canada in 1882. They first lived in Jumping Pond Alberta as they have 3 more sons and a daughter all born there. They were living in Ashcroft, British Columbia in 1891. This is the short but aggravating story of my Goss family. Hi all have found that this Family originated in Derbyshire original name Gorse. The fathers name is Thomas also a games keeper as I have been told previously, but had no proof of.

Hello,
I found a MIRAM GOSS born Sept. 1833 in Utoxeter, Staffs.
Her parents were Thomas & Sarah Goss.
Perhaps if you can find a marriage for Miram you might learn a little more about the parents that way??

Thank you so much any little bit is a help:)

You are welcome.
You should be able to find them on the 1841, 51 etc. census, but although I looked for Miram/Miriam,James & parents,I didn't find them.
Have you tried that yet?
If James was a gamekeeper, did his employer have more than one house, perhaps the family moved around the owner's lands?
It is possible that Thomas might have been a gamekeeper for the same land owner I think?

Unfortunately I do not have access to any census records, I am on a limited budget and I live in Canada. I have tried the FreeCEN and FreeREG but those areas have not been done as of yet. Thanks for your help I have gone on the Staffordshire list but no one has answered yet. Thanks again any little thing might get me closer, I will keep it in my records just in case.

Register as a new user of Rootschat FREE site. Click on 'Enter Rootschat' scroll down to England General board and post a lookup request Staffordshire. Read through their resources and offers. Lots of rootschatters have access to ancestry.com and are more than happy to do Census etc. lookup requests.

The Genforums are a valuable tool:- GOSS Family Genealogy Forum

Also you can add your name to a mailing list for example RootsWeb GOSS Surname and Mailing List

Best wishes.

Good advice from allycat. I don't have ancestry, but I did try searching the census on < findmypast > you can search for free.

Don't overlook the wonders of < www.cyndislist.com/ > and try the following link as genuki is a marvellous resource. (This link takes you direct to the Staffs pages.

Lastly, I had a trawl around the Uttoxeter area, and I find there is a SUDBURY HALL which is now National Trust property. Obviously it would be a long shot, but it might be worth enquiring if there are any archived staff records??

Good luck.........

This thread is about Thomas Goss in Staffs - not the father I think, but could possibly provide a lead?

Hi I live in Stafford and I have found this marriage on Ancestry
JAMES GOSS
MARRIED
SARAH ANN BOWERS
JUNE QTR 1872
ASHTON UNDER LYNE

They are living as man and wife on the 1871 cencus for
Brockhampton Herefordshire
The Lodge
JAMES GOSS HEAD 37 steward/ h gamekeeper from Uttoxeter staffs
SARAH GOSS WIFE 39 " Uttoxeter staffs
THOMAS HP GOSS SON 2 NORBURY "
WILLIAM HENRY GOSS 1 NORBURY "

Uttoxeter is a few miles from Stafford and is famous for a theme park
you may of heard of ALTON TOWERS.

1881 Sees the family in the village of Leigh wich is in the parish of Uttoxeter
Birchwood park
JAMES GOSS HD 42 GAMEKEEPER FROM UTTOXETER
SARAH H " WF 34 " CHESHIRE MOTRAM?

Birchwood Park I 'think' was run by a big farming family and presumably the Goss family lived in the gamekeepers cottage on the estate.

If this info you feel is correct and you would like me to see if I can help anymore please just let me know.

Hi sorry just realised James wife was SARAH HARRIET AND NOT ANN
Apologies Sue

by tggoss on 2011-07-07 17:09:19

Thanks Sue you were not wrong I now believe and this helps confirm the fact that James married two Sarah's firstly Ann then Harriet the first two boys I believe were from this union. He remarried not long after her death which made it confusing to me at first thanks again for your information.
