Guest Family Leigh, Lancashire UK to Wellington New Zealand. 1922/23.
Hi, I was hoping to find some information before my Grandad passed away however sadly he died 3 weeks ago. I was more concerned with finding information about his Grandad who died many years before he was born. I am glad to say I found this information & discussed it with him before he died. It is now my mission to try & find anything I can about his Uncle Thomas, Aunt Betty & cousin Thomas.
Over the last year or so, he has been sharing some of our family history with me. He remembered going with some family members to the train station (mainly because the steam train frightened him) when he was very small. He was born in 1921 & I think I have found them on a passenger list heading to Wellington, New Zealand.
The names are as follows:-
Thomas Guest b 1891 departed from Southampton 1922
Betty (B) Guest b 1893 (nee Humphreys) departed from Southampton in 1923
Thomas Guest b 1916 departed from Southampton 1923
He did confirm the name Betty Guest & I have found her marriage to Thomas in 1914 & then the birth of Thomas so am almost certain these are the ones I am wanting. He was also most certain about them going to New Zealand.
The question is how do I go about finding any info about them once they arrived? In particular I would like to find any descendants if there are any. I have googled backwards and forwards but have hit a brick wall.
Is there anyone out there who can help me out?
Many thanks in advance
Gwen Humphreys.

Hi Gwen,
Which towns did they live in ? - we can check the cemeteries which give a lot of info and hints
It is harder to find information about the living unless someone recognises their ancestors and will share with you. All information on births in New Zealand at NZ Births Deaths & Marriage only goes up to 100 years ago (example if you were searching today info stops at 9th Aug 1910)
You could try Papers Past
You could do a search on Search All Resources - I found 37 'Guests' many in Marlborough
Info on this site goes quickly to the net so you may get an answer from someone who recognises some of your names. Maybe you could adjust the above journal with as many first and surnames as you can think of and towns where they may have settled
Thanks very much for your response. I suspected it would not be easy. I know nothing about them at all other than what I have written above. The surname brings with it its own problems when searching, I have found many a NZ guest house or been a guest on a website:)
I will take a look at the suggestions you have made above thanks for taking the time to respond it certainly looks more promising than the point I was at yesterday.
Gwen.
I have this problem searching one of my ancestral surnames 'Dinner'.
Try the Surname Navigator select the country, then type in your surname and click on search. Will look through multiple databases simultaneously ... lots of information for you to sift through.
I have found this website to be interesting but when I click on the links it tells me the page cannot be displayed, which is very frustrating as there is referrence to a Thomas Guest v's Betty Guest in 1949 which I am thinking could be a divorce. Any ideas how I can get at this info it does say it is fragile next to it & may be unsuitable for scanning?

There is also a Guest, Ngaire Alice v Guest, Thomas [includes marriage certificate] on the same page for 1972 which could be their son. I think I may have found Bettys death in 1973 on the births, deaths & marriage info given above but would have to order the certificate to confirm so thanks for the info.
Thanks allycat I will try your link above it can be very frustrating can't it?
