Hazell of New Zealand and Fiji
I'm looking for Richard HAZELL who lived in N.Z. and Fiji. Married Rhoda Sarah Marter in 1874 and he died in 1874.
Comments
hello Nadamary,
Richard Hazell was 32 when he died at his home in Howe st, Central Auckland on the 6th July 1874
He was a member of the I.O.G.T.
He was a small-goods Baker and owned a coffee shop in Wakefield st, central Auckland, making pies, cakes etc
... it would need more research but he MAY have previously owned a cafe in Revell-street, Hokitika, West Coast around 1866 (named Cafe de Paris)
His widow, Rhoda (1849-1915), gave birth to a daughter at her home in Grey St, Hamilton East, a month after his death on the 24 August 1874. She named her Rhoda Blanchard Hazell
In December 1874 it would seem Rhoda (presumably with her baby), sailed to Levuka, Fiji. Not known if it was to visit or to live but Rhoda Blanchard Hazell married Thomas Hodson ELEMENT (1864-1906) in New Zealand in 1892. Thomas was a painter in Auckland. He died aged 41 and is buried in Plot 12B, Row 6, NonConformist Division B at Waitakere cemetery
do not know the reason for Richard's early death
do you know what happened to the Rhodas ?
Hi Ngaire,
Thank you so much. I had the death notice re. Richard from 'Papers Past' and saw about Hokitika etc but you filled in a couple of gaps, i.e. coffee shops. Was Grey Street in Hamilton? I just presumed it was Auckland.
Rhoda Blanchard was my great grandma. She died in 1969 and I knew her well...pity I wasn't interested enough query her!
Her mother & father married in Jan. 1874 (no parents, addresses or ages are on the marriage cert). Richard died in July and gg.ma was born in August!
Also the family discovered a couple of years ago that g.gma married Patrick RYAN while Thomas Element was still alive(no-one knew about Thomas!. They had several children including my grandpa Richard.
Are you a distant cousin?
