Henry Edmonds married Elizabeth Montgomery looking for any help --- Marton New Zealand
Hi ,
I am looking for help to find details on Henry Edmonds , Henry was born in Sydney NSW Australia in the year of 1870 , he must have come to NZ as he married Elizabeth Montgomery.
Believe Elizabeth was born in Christchurch NZ. Looking at their wedding certificate they were married September 1905 married in Bulls, Rangitikei District, Manawatu - Wanganui. Believe Elizabeth was born in 1872 and died 10/6/1948 in Marton NZ
Henry Edmond being a Farmer and Elizabeth saying domestic duties
Henrys dad was named John Edmonds and John married Maria Edwards (that's all I know about that)
Elizabeth's dad was John Montgomery he was a farmer and he married Margaret McCulloch believe she was born in 1845 scotland she died i believe in 1918 dont know where
Margarets parents were Alexander McCulloch and Margaret Milligan. Thats all I know of that
Henry and Elizabeth had two children that I can find

hi again Rob,
Thanks for your msg today. Yes I did help you with this family years ago but here is a few things about your today's post.
I also see on your online site that you have Elizabeth Jane Montgomery being born maybe in Christchurch and her death as 1919 in Omaka.
Elizabeth Jane Montgomery was born in County Antrim 1872 (not yet verified) and died 10 June 1948 in Rangitikei aged 76. The Edmonds who died in Omaka on 3 March 1919, was 5 hour old Elsie Edmonds. However, about 5 of Elizabeth's later siblings were born in Christchurch from 1880.
Also, you may want to change the above info you have saying "Henrys dad was named John Montgomery and John married Maria Edwards." It was Elizabeth's dad who was John Montgomery.
Elizabeth's Father
* John Montgomery (1837-1908), was born in Letterkenny, County Donegal, Ireland. He married Margaret McCulloch in Durham & had children in Durham & Christchurch NZ. He died 9 Oct 1908 in Wanganui Hospital
Elizabeth's Mother
* Margaret McCulloch (1845-1918), was born 1845 in Gatehouse of Fleet, Scotland, to Alexander McCulloch & Margaret Milligan. She died 11 Nov 1918 at home Wellington Road, Marton. That date was during the Flu Pandemic
John & Margaret are buried together Plot 460, Row 1, Block A at Clifton Cemetery, Rangitikei
Your wiki tree site says that Henry's Father, was James Moore Edmonds (1828-1920). Read my 2012 journal on James Moore Edmonds who was born in Black Torrington, Devon. He died in Northcote, Darebin, Victoria, Australia on 20 May 1920. He married Elizabeth Aynon Williams (1831-1922). She died 17 July 1922, also in Northcote, Victoria.
The are buried together Plot WES 1544 in Melbourne General Cemetery
Elizabeth Jane Edmonds died 10 June 1948 aged 76, her husband, Harry Edmonds died 26 Aug 1964 aged 87 (birth date of 1877) in the Manawatu. They are buried at Mount View cemetery, Marton
HI Ngaire,
wow you are amazing , thanks I think i have lost direction there. hope your keeping well and staying safe from COVID.
hope you didnt mind me hassling you for some details on the family. thank you so much for your help I really appreciate you looking into that for me.
Happy new year to you and all your family
Rob abbott
you're welcome Rob, no hassle at all
Hi Ngaire
just one more thing , on the wedding certificate I have it says Henry and Elizabeth married in September 1905 at the age of 24 (henry) , Henry born in Sydney NSW and for Elizabeth it says she was born Christchurch her age 26 , they married in the district of Manawatu.
On the Wedding Certificate it says Henrys dad was John Edmonds and his mum was Maria Edwards
Elizabeth's Dad was John Montgomery and her mum was Margaret McCulloch Milligan. I think Milligan was Margaret McCullochs mothers maiden name.
The only reason I have written the above as I dont think James Moore Edmonds is the father of Henry Edmonds as the certificate say the father is John Edmonds. I do know that James Moore Edmonds did have sons named Henry
James Moore Edmonds married Elizabeth Aynon Williams and that does not match up with Margaret McCulloch or my wedding certificate.
I am a bit lost here wish I could just send the certificate as an attachment but doesn't look like I can do that.
Tell me if I am on the wrong track as it doesn't seem to look right to me.
thanks again , I hope I given enough details
sorry to be a pain... do you have an email I can send you the marriage certificate for henry and elizabeth
I do not think James Moore Edmonds was the father Rob, but you have him on your wiki tree as Henry's father which is why I sent the link to my journal on him so you can see for yourself
In your above comment .. on the wedding certificate I have it says Henry and Elizabeth married in September 1905 at the age of 24 (Henry), Henry born in Sydney NSW and for Elizabeth it says she was born Christchurch her age 26, they married in the district of Manawatu
* If Henry was 24 in 1905 his birth year would be 1881
He died 1964 aged 87 which is a birth year of 1877
* If Elizabeth was 26 in 1905 her birth year would be 1879
She died in 1948 aged 76 which is a birth year of 1872
* They married 13 Sep 1905
The first child born in New Zealand to John & Margaret Montgomery (registered) was daughter Margaret Ellen Montgomery on 18 Nov 1879. If you know the year they emigrated or which ship they arrived on, it would prove absolutely which country Elizabeth was born in.
. summary of their known children to date
1867 - Andrew William Montgomery (born Durham)
1872 - Elizabeth Jane Montgomery (eldest daughter)
.. NZ born
18 Nov 1879 - Margaret Ellen Montgomery
22 May 1881 - Rebecca Montgomery
01 Oct 1883 - Samuel Montgomery
27 May 1885 - Charles Montgomery (born Annat)
6 March 1888 - Isaac Montgomery
. when Isaac served in WWI as Rifleman 23/1512, his next of kin, in Sep 1915, was sister Elizabeth Edmonds of Lambert St., Marton
* because the birth years of their NZ born children are pretty consistent, the large gap from 1872-1879 could mean further children/sons - in her obituary Elizabeth was the eldest daughter
Wanganui Chronicle, 11 June 1948
EDMONDS - On Jun 10 1948, at her residence, 20 Waitere Street, Marton, Elizabeth Jane, beloved wife of Henry Edmonds and mother of Ada and Stan; aged 76 years.
. children 1906-1986 Ada Beatrice Edmonds & 1913-1967 Stanley John Henry Edmonds
EDMONDS - On June 10 at 20 Waitere Street, Marton, Elizabeth Jane, loved wife of Harry Edmonds and eldest daughter of the late John and Margaret Montgomery, formerly of 'Pinedale," Annat.
. The friends of Mr Henry Edmonds are invited to attend the funeral of his late wife, which will leave his residence, 20 Waitere Street, Marton, after a service commencing at 1.30 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday, June 12 1948). for the Mount View Cemetery
. Members of Court Little John, A.O.F., are respectfully requested to attend the funeral of the late wife of Brother H. Edmonds.
Note of interest Margaret Montgomery was a suffragette. She was living in Annat, Canterbury, when she signed the Women's Suffrage Petition in 1893 for the right of women to vote. She was a very early signature being #185 on page 2 from a total of nearly 32,000 signatures on more than 500 pages. After this mammoth petition NZ became the first self-governing nation in the world where women won the right to vote.
ps, I do not have to sight the birth certificate thanks Rob, you are writing what you see
