• AXEL Holtz
born in Sweden 1863
occupation Masseur & Medical Electrician
8 Jan 1912 The important part no played by electricity as a therapeutic agent is made abundantly clear by a visit to the rooms of Mr Axel Holtz, 123 Willis-street. The rooms themselves are tastefully furnished, but what impresses the casual observer most is the electrical equipment. There is, for instance, a sort of arm chair in which the patient sits with his arms (bare to the elbows) and his legs (bare to the knees) in four porcelain cells, corresponding to the limbs, plunged in electricity, without any unpleasant sensations, to take the current through the whole body along a determined part. There are other 'machines' at the rooms, by all of which electricity in some way or other is made to do curative work. One of these - part of the High Frequency treatment - resembles a huge bird-cage of steel wire, in which the patients sits fully clothed, surrounded and and permeated by electric fluid. Vibration is also utilised as a curative agent and also the Swedish medical movements. The plant installed is the very latest procurable. Mr Holtz treats patients both under medical direction and independently and he is assisted in the electrical treatment of patients by Miss Eveson, who is also a fully qualified masseuse. Mr Holtz was formerly masseur at the Rotorua Sanatorium, working under Dr Wohlmann, Government Baleontologist and also at Hanmer Springs.
died 1914 aged 51
1 June 1914 - The sudden death is announced of Mr Axel Holtz, of Willis street, Wellington. Born in Stockholm, Sweden, the late Mr Holtz graduated as a masseur at the Gothenburg Massage and Medical Gymnastic Institute, under the directorship of Professor Linckosog. For a considerable time he was a masseur under Dr Gartner, Gothenburg, and was afterwards in practice in England. For five years he was chief masseur under engagement to the New Zealand Government at Rotorua and Hanmer and he afterwards resigned to take up practice in Wellington

* Margaret had a son, James Henry Noble (1864-1940) in Wellington, 14 Feb 1864. She named the father as James Miller but possible it was James Scott. James was born Noble, father named Miller, his name became James Holtz, he died as James Henry Scott. Margaret married George Holtze in Dec that year. George died March 1884. She had a daughter in Blenheim in May 1885, named Lena Alice Scott (1885-1976). Margaret next partnered Joseph Scott (1826-1889) a Baker in Blenheim, He died when Lena was 4 but she married as Scott in 1913 (to Lindsay Graham McDonald).
29 Aug 1877 ASSAULT (exerts only, more at link) - Philip Lawrence was charged on the information of Joseph Scott, with assaulting one Margaret Holtze on Tuesday August 14th and pleaded Not Guilty. The witnesses were ordered out of Court.
James Holtze, son of complainant, was duly sworn and deposed that he saw Mr Lawrence kick his mother on Collie's Bridge opposite his own door, he also shoved her; do not know whether he wanted to shove her off the bridge; she picked up the lid of a jar and threw it at him; it did not hit him but struck the door; Lawrence picked up an axe and swung it at her trying to hit her; she caught hold of the axe handle and wrenched it out of his hand; he threatened to kick her inside out; my mother then went back into our shop.
Cross-examined by the defendant:- Recollect Mr Healey speaking to you that morning; you were both laughing at our window being broken; said to my mother that yo had been laughing; recollect Mr Scott coming over from the bakehouse and you said to him that it was a lie that you had been laughing at the window; he said it was not done by a bottle at any rate; positive he did not make use of any oaths; my mother was not under the verandah when you kicked her; the axe was standing by your door and you swung it backwards and forwards.
Margaret Holtze deposed that she was standing at the door talking to Mr Scott; Scott and Lawrence had some words in front of the shop; Scott went over the bridge and I followed with the boy, when Lawrence came out and pushed me, also kicked me on the leg. I called to Scott and took the lid of a stone jar and threw it at Lawrence; he said "I'll make you pay for what you have broke"; I went to see if anything was broken and he kicked me a second time in the stomach; he had one hand on the door and another on an axe and he said if I came near he would kick my inside out; he threatened to strike me with the axe if I came near him; a lot of people had collected and he still called me names; then went away; he uses bad language every time I cross the bridge and I have to wait until somebody is passing to get over.
Cross-examined by the defendant:- do not recollect Mr Heally being there; Scott said to you that the window was not broken by a bottle; you were on your doorstep when you were swinging the axe; never made use of any bad language.
Joseph Scott was sworn and deposed: Am a baker in Blenheim; about nine in the morning of the day in question Mrs Holtze spoke to me of Lawrence making fun of the window, when he came out and said it was a lie and I told him never to mind, it was not done by a bottle as his was; he commenced to upbraid me and when I made towards him he ran under his verandah; he then took up an axe and threatened to split me down with it; then went back under my own verandah and as I was going across the bridge to the bakehouse Mrs Holtze sang out "Joe"; she was then abreast of Lawrence's door and he shoved her with his right hand and kicked her at the same time; she stooped and picked up a jar lid and threw it at him, but it missed; as she stooped to pick it up again he kicker her in the stomach; he said "I'll make you pay for those things you broke;" at the same time he picked up the axe again and threatened her; picked up the jar lid, which was whole and laid it on a chair.
Cross-examined by the defendant: Did not challenge you to come out to fight.
Philip Lawrence was sworn and deposed: an an auctioneer and merchant in Blenheim; Scott and I had a quarrel and Mrs Holtze came to my door and wanted to knock me down with an axe; she made a dart at least; pushed her out of the door; she threw the lid of a milkpan at me; she sat down on a chair, used awful language and challenged me out to fight; Scott said "if she can't take it out of you, I will," the only time I touched her was at the door when I pushed her in self defence; Mrs Holtze broke the jar produced.
His Worship in delivering judgment said that the assault was not in itself an aggravated one, but the unpleasant feeling between the parties was the worst feature in the case, being quite a nuisance to the town. All the witnesses deposed to the bad language used on both sides. which Lawrence appeared to have commenced. The assault was very trivial, but he would like to put a stop to these proceedings and if the parties came before him again he would take good care to do so. The party assaulted had been very excited and it was proved by evidence and the admission of the defendant that an assault had been committed. Had it not been for the surrounding circumstances, he would have dismissed the case as trivial. The defendant would be fined 5s with £3 15s costs. This concluded the business and the Court rose.
3 July 1908 Mrs J. Scott sen., passed away at the residence of her son in Arthur Street early this morning. Deceased, who was 61 years of age, was a native of Sydney, but had lived for about 56 years in New Zealand. She had been a resident of Blenheim for about 38 years and had always carried on business in the Square. Mrs Scott was very highly respected among those who knew her and her death will be deeply regretted.

Northern Advocate, 13 Oct 1937 Maori Lady With Eight Children Wins £500. The winner of the £500 prize (2011 equivalent of $48,000) in the Art Union drawn on Monday was Mrs H. Holtz of St Jacob's Ladder, Mangakahia Road. Her nom-de-plume was 'Holtv.' Mrs Holtz lives with her husband in a small tin hut and she has eight children. Her husband is a surfaceman employed on the road. Mrs Holtz said that she had no plans for the moment and intended to go on living where she was at present. She could, however, find plenty on which to spend it.
25 June 1940 William Capill, labourer of Kaikohe, was sentenced to two months hard labour for assaulting Hermann Holtz and having caused wilful damage to property to the value of 14/-. Constable D. Robertson stated that Capill had attacked Holtz in his hut at Tautoro and caused damage to the interior of the hut by throwing stones through the window. Capill was stated to have given considerable trouble in the past and when under the influence of liquor had threatened Holtz.
7 May 1942 A surfaceman from Tautoro, near Kaikohe, Hermann Holtz, aged 54 years. was put on trial before Mr Justice Callan and a jury in the Supreme Court on a charge that on January 31 he wilfully set fire to a Maori whare, thereby committing the crime of arson. Mr Cleal stated that the whare in question was the home of a Maori family, about a mile and a half distant from his own place. Holtz had a grievance concerning some furniture in the house which he claimed and the Maori family members were afraid of him. About 5p.m. on January 31 accused, who had been in Kaikohe and apparently had some drink, went to the whare. The wife and family saw him coming and ran away. From a distance they saw Holtz collect some sticks and a flax kit bag, place them against a wall of the whare and set fire to them. He then went away and lay down in some fern and a Maori boy ran to the house and threw water on the kit bag, putting out the blaze but the weatherboards were all charred. Seen afterwards by the police, Holtz said he was drunk at the time and did not remember what happened.
31 Jan 1944 When Hermann Wilhelm Holtz, roadman, of Kaikohe, left his lunch, some bottles of tea and £2 cash in a cream stand byt the roadside at 7.30 Wednesday morning, he did not know that Mauri Witehira 22 of Kaikohe was hungry. At 9.30, when Holtz returned for a drink of tea he discovered that the lunch had been eaten, the bottles broken and the money stolen. Isaac Kawa Erueti, aged 18, also appeared. Witehira was sentenced to three months at Auckland

PHOTO The Holz brothers
William, Ernest and Allan. Ernest John Julius Holz, #39535, 3rd Wellington Battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade and Allan Holz, #39534, 3rd Wellington Battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade, killed in action 13 June 1917.
The brothers were among the eight surviving children of Bertha & Julius Holz. They were posted to the 3rd Wellington Battalion and remained together for the duration of their service. They were sent to France May 1917. Two weeks later the three brothers were preparing to join the fighting in Belgium, where the Allies had captured Messines Ridge from German forces the previous week. In the early hours of 13 June 1917 a German shell landed at Pont-de-Nieppe, hitting a room in which the brothers were asleep in their billet. The explosion killed Ernest and Allan, while William suffered severe wounds to his abdomen, wrist, hip and foot and was evacuated to England, but the severity of his wounds meant his war service was over and he was sent back to New Zealand in July 1917. His brothers were buried side by side in Motor Car Corner Cemetery in Belgium. Back in New Zealand, Defence Minister Sir James Allen broke the news to their mother on a personal visit to her Wellington home.

Only Holtz I ever heard of was a Joseph Oren Holtz. He was adopted by Robert W and Essie 'Bryant' Logan. He was given the name 'William Logan'. His biological sister, (Karen) found him in later years and he took up his birth name again. He would have been born in the late 1860's to mid 1870's. There is a site that comes up if you type his name in the browser, but you have to sign in. I have yet to find WHERE one can register for the site. You still might have luck there though. I do think the administrator has contact information.
Good Luck
