How can I tell which ancester is mine on a ship's passenger list ?

Question by suegraham

I have a few ancesters with very common names, and I am having trouble figuring out which one is mine. GEORGE GRAHAM was born about 1818, or earlier I cannot find his birth, not sure if he was born here or not, he wasn't a convict, because when he married CATHERINE WATKINS on the 24th of May 1839 in Melbourne Australia, he did not apply to marry, nore was CATHERINE. I cannot tell when he died because once again, the common name.
