by Billmare on 2011-07-22 05:26:09

Morrish-there are heaps of them and many are in the States but our came from Cornwall to Melbourne, Australia and then married

If it's John Morrish 1820-1883 and wife Elizabeth, nee Stoneman 1823-1899 they arrived with their two oldest children on the ship the "Berkshire" which arrived in Point Henry, Geelong on 3rd October, 1848. They settled near Drysdale and farmed there until around 1860 when they moved to Kingston, near Creswick and continued to farm there. John Morrish died in Bungaree in 1883 and his wife Elizabeth died in Kingston in 1899. Both are buried in the Creswick Cemetery in Victoria.

William Morrish married Susan Harris Paynter in Melbourne and came to NZ to the gold rush at Stafford Hokitika in 1860's

hi Billmare,

was William a Boot & Shoe manufacturer in Hokitika in the 1870s ?

if this is the right one I will see what I can find

by ngairedith on 2011-07-22 21:55:44

we can narrow down his arrival to prior to 1865 by this newspaper article saying that from 1865 to 1875 he was in Kanieri and Stafford, Hokitika

by Billmare on 2011-07-22 23:05:08

Hi ngairedith
Yes -
That is my great grandfather - he owned a store in Hokitika and then later on he bought a store in Greymouth (1894) and his son managed the Hokitika store. He was married to an Elizabeth Smith after the death oF his first wife Susan Harris Paynter in 1885. He was a well respected businessman in the local community. One article says he was in Stafford from 1865 - 1875 learning his trade before opening the store.I have tracked down many papers past articles which are very enlightening but not one of us has been able to establish any ship arrival or family back in England. Thanks so much for all your help.
