I am looking for Marcus (1 or 2 records list him as Mark) BERESFORD. Alive 1778 - 1834.He was my ggfather, through his daughter Emma.
Marcus B was resident of St. Marylebone Parish, Middlesex (north-west edge of London)between 1816 (marriage)& 1834 (burial).
Occupation described in baptismal record of his children as 'trade',(1817), 'trade' (1818), 'trade' (1820), 'servant' (1822), 'mechanic' (1824), 'clerk' (1826).
Occupation described as 'coach trimmer' in his son's (George Frederick)marriage certificate (1846)and as 'coach trimmer in his daghter Emma's marriage in 1862.
He was buried in St. Marylebone churchyard in 1834 at age 56, which implies birth in 1778.
Marcus married 16 December, 1816 in the St. Marylebone Parish Church, Mary Penticost, spinster.
He is described as 'widower' in the marriage document, but as 'bachelor' in the 3 notices of marriage banns in the 3 Sundays prior to the wedding.
His widow, Mary Penticost Beresford married James Mugridge, described in the 1851 census return of St. Marylebone as aged 50 and by occupation a 'journeyman tailor'. She is described as aged 52, a 'laundress'with 2 'stepsons', Thomas & John Beresford aged 17 & 16.
Marcus (or Mark) Beresford & his wife Mary had these children: George Frederick (b. 1817),Mary Anne (b. 1818), William (b. 1820), Charles (b. 1822),James Robert (b. 1824), Keziah (b.1826), Emma (born about 1829/30), Thomas (born 1833) & John (born posthumously 1834).

Much research has been expended on tracing this Marcus's origins but they remain elusive. Is there a link to the Tyrone, Waterford or Decies (Irish) Beresfords. The Christian name 'Marcus' was first used by the Irish Tyrone Beresfords from the baptism of Marcus B in 1694. Many of his male descendants have used this name.
Or did my ggf's parents simply 'borrow' the Christian name through a local network knowledge of some of the aristocratic Beresfords who were resident in Mayfair,, St. James, Bloomsbury in the late 18th century.
If anyone can give me a possible lead on the origins of my Marcus, I would be most grateful.
Sincerely,
Richard Beresford Nightingale.
6 December 2010.
