I am researching PETER BIRT CLARK (CLARKE), and his wife; ELIZABETH MCCUTCHEON (MCCUTCHON). Peter Clark was born in Canada around 1854 of Irish parents. He died in New Orleans, La around 1946 at 92 yrs. I have been unable to find his grave. I do know that he was of the Catholic faith. I found Peter in the New Orleans 1894/95 City Directory. He was listed as a business owner: P.B. Clark and Company(Coal, address 158 Common). His partner was a John A. Montgomery. Peter Clark's residence was listed as Birmingham, Alabama. He was farming in New Orleans by June 5 th, 1900, when his son, Fred Burt Clark was born at his home, near the French Quarter, very close to the Mississippi River. He was the couples only living child. They had had twin boys to die as infants. Elizabeth McCutcheon Clark died c.1908/10 of Edema (called Dropsy at that time).
Peter had emigrated to the United States around 1872 possibly in Penn. I found a 1880 census record in Waukon Allamakee, Iowa stating a Peter Clark, son of(prob Joseph) Patrick (b. 1831 Ire.) was born 1854 in Canada. Two women were listed as wives of his father Patrick 1. Mary Elizabeth, and 2.Katherine Sheridan (Morman Records). I found a Joseph Clark born in Canada Aug 1847 on the 1900 New Orleans, La census. married to a Mary born in Illinois. Their children were LeRoy b. 1881 IA., and Frederick b. 1884 IA,(I found Frederick in Houston,Tx in the 1920's census) Was Joseph, Peter's brother?
Elizabeth McCutcheon was born Nov 1878, and died c. 1908/10 in New Orleans. Elizabeth would have been over 20 years younger than Peter. Her parents were William Bainbridge McCutcheon Jr.(1846 NO - Aug 6,1926 NO) and Katherine (Kate) Levy (1852 Va - Jan 26,1928 NO). William Bainbridge McCutcheon's family had been in New Orleans, La for several generations. His parents being William Bainbridge,Sr (1818 LA - LA),and Mary Matilda Thompson (1820 - aft 1899 prob NO). I have not found Mary Matilda's family but William Bainbridge was the son of Capt. Samuel McCuthceon (McCutchon)(Nov 1,1773 Phil,PA -Sept 22,1840 N.O.)and Rebecca Butler (April 20, 1782 Carlisle, Pa - June 23, 1844 NO)the daughter of William Butler and Jane Carmichaei. Capt Samuel McCutcheon had fought in the battle of New Orleans, His oldest son; Samuel McCutcheon Jr married Adele Destrehan and lived in" Destrehan Plantation" on the river road. Samuel Jr had inherited the plantation from his wife's family after the death of her brother.
Fred Birt Clark left New Orleans in the 1920's. He first went to Galveston, Texas where he worked at "Sylvan Beach". He married Faye Whatley Oct 27, 1926 in Galveston. He was listed in the city directory of Houston, Texas in 1922. He divorced Faye Whatley around 1942 and married Jean L. Mooney in 1947 in Houston. Fred Birt Clark died in Houston, Texas on Dec 31, 1970. He is buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Houston. Any one who recognizes any of these people I would love to hear from them.
