Civil registration of all births, marriages, and deaths in Ireland began in 1864 (except for non-Catholic marriages, for which registration started in 1845). Registration produced two sets of records: registers for births, marriages, and deaths and published indexes to these registers. The repositories for the records spilt in 1922, with the records for Northern Ireland being kept by the General Register Office (GRO) in Belfast, while records for the Republic of Ireland are housed at the GRO in Dublin. But the record set as a whole has survived and provides an invaluable source of vital information for Irish research.

This database contains details extracted from the published indexes of Irish marriage registers. Details provided include

?name
?marriage year
?registration district
?volume and page number in the original publication
You can use the information in the index entry to obtain a copy of the entry in the original register from the General Register Office.

Hi janilye,
On contacting Belfast last year, (by phone) I was told similar by an archivist there, my question was regarding another ancestor from Co. Down, I was told that fortunately the records for there had survived the fire damage for the most part, and was talked through their site, which can be difficult. I have't contacted Dublin yet, but on another family site I discovered that from 1840, according to them? there are 2 John Flaherty marriages for East Galway and 2 for West Galway, all very confusing when family info conflicts, but all in all it would seem a trip to both places is needed in my case. Thank you for your information, I need all the help I can get with this particular search.

Hi John,

I think we might be distant relatives. My nan is Mary Clancy(maiden name)and her mother (my great nan) was also Mary Clancy who's parents were Bridget and Thomas. It sounds like your great nan was my nans aunty!! Bit confusing but your information is very similar to mine. Also John Flaherty was married to Mary Belton in my family tree!!! Get in contact at grahamp600@aol.com

My great Nan married Martin Folan

look forward to hearing from you both.
