Hello. Just search on google for "rauner and puhoi" and you will find quite a lot of information. By the way, Puhoi is in New Zealand.
Good luck.

hello Kat,

In 1863, the early settlers of Puhoi came from Bohemia, an area of what is now the Czech Republic. After a long voyage the settlers arrived in Auckland before being taken by sailing cutter to the mouth of the Puhoi River. They were transferred to Maori canoes for the last four miles of their 124 days long journey.

The settlers were dumped in a wilderness vastly different from what they had expected and felt despondent and let down.
Initially firewood was the sole trading commodity. It took a lot of effort for little gain but they had no choice but to take what little was on offer. By 1870 there were several hundred head of cattle which provided them with meat, hides and bullocks for coupling together to move logs and for general haulage.

The first Eghalanda pioneers arrived in 1863 in Puhoi, and shortly afterwards several other families settled in the Ohaupo-Te Rore district in the Waikato. Of the 49 original Bohemian family names, only 26 seem to have survived, the remainder having for one reason or another vanished due to marriage, not having children and a few moved completely away at an early stage without a trace.
Apart from the passengers on the first ship, the ‘War Spirit’ (l863 & a link provided below), there were those on the ‘Liverpool’ (l866), the ‘Queen Bee” (1872), the ‘Friedeberg’ (1875) and the ‘Shakespeare’ and ‘Terpsichore’ (1876). Those 6 ships were not the only vessels that brought passengers for Puhoi (or Ohaupo). Other families, more especially those leaving from Germany came independently of the earlier groups and still others came via Australia.

Read more about the history of Puhoi on PUHOI HISTORICAL SOCIETY which includes some great info and photos

there was a Johann Rauner born in Lossin, Bohemia 20 Nov 1818 to Adalbert Rauner and Anna Karl. Johann married Anna Maschek and had children. He passed away on 1864 in Puhoi, New Zealand

He had a son, also named Johann Rauner (1844-1913), born in Lossin Bohemia, marrying Anna Paul (1853-1919) & also passing away in Puhoi. He and Anna had at least 14 children, many of whom were born in NZ. This Johann is buried Block I, Row 21, Plot 3 at Puhoi cemetery as John Rauner

There are SURNAME spelling variants on various early documents. One such family is PODLESAK (BOTELSAK, POTTLESAK or PALISAACH). Over time, some of the original settlers Anglicised their Christian Names preferring ‘John’ rather than Johann, ‘Lawrence’ instead of Lorenz, ‘Margaret’ instead of Margarethe and there were others

There are 32 Rauner on the Puhoi Cemetery database but this list only starts from 1900
