james and jane LOCHHEAD from Scotland, settled in New Zealand.

Query by CliffLochhead

Seeking any information from decendants of James and Jane Lochhead (nee RUSSELL) who settled in Dunsandle, New Zealand in late 1850s.
Their son Robert Russell was born in Dunbarton, Scotland in 1855 so i guess this is where they are from. But I have no further information than that.

Thank you.

You can find further marriage information on James LOCHHEAD and Jane RUSSELL on Scotland's People site, it is a pay per view.

Marriage (image will give you their ages and their fathers name and occupation)

Date: 14/07/1853
Groom: LOCHHEAD JAMES
Bride: RUSSELL JANE FR863
Parish: CADDER /LANARK
Ref No.: 626/00 0030 0242

Their son John, the date could be birth or baptism you will need to look at image to clarify.

Date: 08/04/1854
Name: LOCHHEAD JOHN
Father: JAMES LOCHHEAD
Mother: JANE RUSSELL FR814
Parish: CADDER /LANARK
Ref No: 626/00 0030 0148

Nothing showing for Robert Russell LOCHHEAD in 1855 but it could be under just Robert and there a quite a few of those after 1855. John is the only one before 1855, that I can find but the surname may have been transcribed incorrectly.

James and Jane may have moved for work or had relatives in Dumbarton area at the time of Roberts birth as their marriage and first son were born Cadder Lanarkshire. Cadder is about 17-18 miles from Dumbarton.

Do you know if Robert had any other siblings, apart form John above and do you know what James' occupation was.

Thanks for the reply, the information is helpful. I should clarify - Roberts full name was Robert Russell Lochhead born 25 Nov 1855, in Dunbarton as mentioned. They must have emmigrated to NZ soon after the birth of Robert as they were in NZ in the late 1850s. I am not sure of more children but guess that they were born on NZ. I have no idea as to James occupation.

Do you have a marriage for Robert Russell Lochhead's the marriage certificate should list his fathers name and occupation.

Either James or Janes or even Roberts death certificate may or may not show how long they were in New Zealand.

Hi Cliff
My name is Veronica Butler and I'm related. I'm descended from Mary Gardiner LOCHHEAD (sister of James) She also came to NZ with her husband James BLAIR and 4 children. Their sisters Janet & Elisa Smith (Betsy) & 2 children (JAMIESON), their father - John & nephew - William (son of Thomas) all came to NZ. I've done some research in Scotland & have considerable information on their descendants in New Zealand. You can contact me at vbutler@clear.net.nz

Looking forward to hearing from you & sharing information

Hi Cliff
My name is Emily Russell (nee Greig) and I'm a descendant of Robert Russell Lochhead. My married name is just a coincidence! James, Jane and some of their children are buried in the Addington Cemetery, Selwyn Street, Christchurch. I'm not sure which part of the country you are in, but I'm in Christchurch and would be happy to email you a photo of the headstone if you are interested. I also have copies of photos of both James and Jane and could put you in contact with one of my Dad's cousins who has done quite a bit of research on the Lochheads.
Hope this helps! My email address is dean6@orcon.net.nz if you wish to contact me.
