FATAL
ACCIDENT AT GLENORCHY
The Stawell correspondent of the Argus,
under date of Monday, that a fatal accident
occurred at Glenorchy today, by which a
young man named Kindred, a resident ot
Deep Lead, lost his life. Mr Derry the en-
gineer, was inspecting the weir, when Kin-.
dred and another man (his father-in.law),
started to go across the river in a little punt
boat. There was some water in it at the
time, but they resolved to bale it out at the
further side. When opposite the weir's
crest, over which a vast body of water was
rushing, the boat was upset. The elder man,
being able to swim, soon gained shallow
water, but Kindred, who appeared unable to
swim, was swept over the weir. The men
rushed down to render what assistance they
could, but were unable to rescue the body,
which has not yet been recovered. Kindred
leaves a wife and two children.
The weir is standing admirably, and show-
ing no signs of any damage. Today the
water rose in the Wimmera at the rate of
2in per hour.

It is up to the relatives to add the names of deceased to existing headstones; it is expensive to employ a stonemason to add the information, not all do it. I have a great uncle who was buried with his sister who died 30 years before him and his name did not appear on the original headstone. A nephew added a foot stone 15 years after the uncle's death. Which was about a quarter of the price.
I suppose it all comes down to cost and whether there are relatives around to go to the trouble.

Thank you Janilye, for all of the fantastic information you have given me. I was just a bit sad that he wasn't mentioned. I thought for a while there he must have upset the family.
