Janilye – re William (Cudmore) FURNELL, from curlycor

Journal by curlycor

The profile you saw on my ‘curlycor’ journal was out of date. I have now updated the profile. I did not realize when I deleted the former profile I had also deleted your comment. Please go into my new profile to see the changes I have made. William’s obituary refers to my Great Great Grandfather William Cudmore FURNELL. My relative in Canberra, Australia (surname FURNELL) and I have been exchanging information about the FURNELL Family for some years. We cannot find any christening records in Ireland for William, but think he was born in Limerick City. However, we have found that Michael Cudmore FURNELL was christened in Dublin on 8 July 29, at St. Andrews Church, parents Samuel and Marie FURNELL. Michael’s death notice in The Age, Melbourne newspaper, dated 25 July 1888 say he had 2 brothers, the late Samuel and William, the latter living in South Melbourne. We think William Cudmore FURNELL may be related to Michael and Samuel. We did not know that a William FURNELL was the captain of the steam-tug ‘Young Australian’ from 1855. I have looked on the internet and have found a picture of the tug but not who the captains were. Do you have any information about this?

Okay I've just found a South Melbourne William Furnell, but not a lot of information. This one born about 1827, so the right age for the brother of Michael and Samuel. By the death-date, He appears to be the William Furnell, -
Leader (Melbourne, Vic.) Saturday 21 October 1899
FURNELL.— On the 7th October, at Wallaroo, South Australia, William Furnell, the dearly beloved father of W. F., F. C. F., Mrs. Lynch and Mrs. Thompson, late of South Melbourne, 72 years.
Chronicle (Adelaide,) Saturday 14 October 1899
The Marine Department at Port Adelaide have been advised that Mr. William
Furnell, second keeper at the Middle Bank lightship, died on Saturday of an attack of influenza. He joined the service in November, 1882, and received his last appointment on September 1, 1897. The first and third keepers have been directed by the president of the Marine Board to maintain
the lightship pending the appointment of another keeper.
If you ask tonkin he will give you the death registrations

Thank you very much for your comments about the Furnell Family. I had not seen the death notice in the ‘Leader’ Melbourne for William Furnell. W.F. is William Furnell Jnr, F.C.F. is Frederick Cudmore Furnell(the Great Grandfather of my relation in Canberra), Mrs Lynch’s maiden name was Josephine Lucelle Furnell and Mrs Thompson’s maiden name was Lydia Furnell (my Great Grandmother). I will contact ‘tonkin’.
Thank you for the information.

Hullo Tonkin
Thank you for your message.
I would appreciate having the registration number for deaths and marriages for the Furnell Family, thank you. I note that I have William and Ann’s 1st child as Eliza Ann Furnell – sources Ancestry (from the local library), and Family Search. On your list (registration Nos.) she is named Eliza Jane Furnell. I see in one of my profiles I have William and Ann's third 3rd child as Mary Ann FURNELL when I should have her as Mary Jane FURNELL. I have had problems finding my way around Family Tree Circle but I now understand better how it works. It would be useful if there were more instructions to explain how Family Tree Circle works, especially for new members. I have tried to contact Scott but cannot get him by email and there is no ‘support’ at the right bottom of the Family Tree Circle pages as suggested.

Sorry my error.
Misread the birth record for William and Ann's first child.
The correct details are:

Name: Eliza Anne FURNELL.
Born: 08 March 1856, Adelaide district, South Australia.
Father: William FURNELL.
Mother: Anne SARGEANT.

Ref: Registry of Births, South Australia. Book 5 page 298.

by tonkin on 2017-04-07 07:15:22

CORRECT.

William and Ann's third child was:
Name: Mary Jane FURNELL.
Born: 1859 Emerald Hill, Victoria.
Reg. #17260.

After making my comment on 30 March 2017 I had only found seven children and then I found another birth recorded under PURNELL.

Name: William PURNELL.
Born: 1857 Sandridge, Victoria.
Father: William PURNELL.
Mother: Ann SERGEANT.
Reg. #14169.

Note spelling of surname. (Index or typo error)

Once a comment has been submitted it cannot be edited and I was unable to make corrections and slip William in between Eliza and Mary, hence the misunderstanding.

Curlycor.

Will do a few more record searches and pass on the registration numbers you want.

Not sure where Scott is hiding and I have not been able to make contact with him for some time. It's not hard to find your way around the site after you have been here for a few years and keeping up with the changes, but it's much harder for new members.

I agree with you about having instructions for new members on how to use the site. Might put it to vote...

Thank you for the latest records. It was interesting to see William FURNELL's birth records under 'PURCELL'. I have tried to find a death and marriage record for Eliza Anne FURNELL but so far have not been able to find one.
