Currently revising a biography of this man who was born in Sydney c1810 and subsequently sent to Tasmania where he was acknowledged by hotelier Charles Connelly (Bricklayers’ Arms) as his son. John was successively a cabinetmaker, hotelier, convict, bigamist, Californian gold seeker and proprietor of the Flemington Hotel, which was situated on Mt Alexander Road, the much travelled route to the Victorian goldfields. He married, successively, Catherine Clark and Mary Ann Fox, both colonial born.
