Catherine was a daughter of William MATTHEWS & Anne NICHOLSON. Alexander & Cath arrived in New Zealand in 1862 on the ship "Zealandia" under the surname Jardine, with his sister Isabella Jarden. For some reason William did not travel with them (he was then aged about 3). He followed his parents in about 1883, when he was about 24

- his wife, Jane Susannah Uren was charged in court, on remand, on 25 January 1898 with not having her house registered under the Infant Life Protection Act. Mr Donnelly appeared for the defendant. The evidence showed that the house had been unregistered for a fortnight, and the defendant had been keeping a child during that time. Mr Donnelly stated that the defendant was utterly without means, and if a fine was imposed she would be unable to pay it. Mr Beetham remarked that the defendant was still keeping the child in defiance of the law, and he must impose a penalty. She would be fined 1s. Adjutant Bishop, of the Salvation Army, paid the amount
