John Henry Durant convict Tasmania
John durant born 1819 Norfolk England trile doc. Court Minutes for John Durrant's case, but they do not give much more detail. He was tried alongside a 16 year old called Thomas Tillet, both accused of stealing the trousers belonging to a William Custance.
the report has that John years 18 at time of trial
Both pleaded not guilty, but were found guilty by the jury. Thomas Tillet was sentenced to hard labour in the House of Correction for 6 months.
John Durrant was "ordered and adjudged to be transported beyond the seas to such a place or places as His Majesty by the advice of his privy Council shall order and direct for the term of seven years."
He was then tried for a second count of "laying the property of John Kitson". No evidence was offered, and he was found not guilty by the jury.
Unfortunately, the notes do not record the parish he was from, so I could not continue research into his family history.
he was on the HULKS in England bet 1 Apr 1837 and 27 Oct 1837 before going on Moffatt 2
