John Smith of West Virginia 1766 - 1850

My 4th great grandfather is John Smith. I believe he was born in Green County Pennsylvania about 1766. I have been using ancestry.com and created my family tree there. I am at a dead end finding who John Smith's father was. John Smith died December 22, 1850 in Monongalia County West Virginia. From what I have learned so far if it is correct, John Smith was married two times. In 1786 he married Elizabeth Davis and had 7 children. Then in 1816 he married Catherine Hess and had 9 children. John Smith is buried in Arnettsville, Monongalia, West Virginia.
My mother never married my father who was a Smith. She left him when I was 3 years old so I never knew any of my relatives on the Smith side of my family. I believe that someone that grew up in a close Smith family and who has a John Smith in their tree fitting the details above may be able to help me figure out who John Smith's father was.

Randy60 on 2020-12-29 22:42:39I'm still searching. My Smith line are all in Monongalia, Marion and Tyler Counties to the best of my knowledge. I never knew any of my Smith relatives not even my father who was Wilbert Smith born 1912 in Salem, Doddridge County West Virginia. His father was Alvin Smith born 1878 in Marion County, his father was James Franklin Smith born 1852 but don't know what county, his father was Riley H Smith born 1827 in Monongalia County, his father was Lewis Smith born 1787 in Pennsylvania I believe Greene County, and his father was John Smith born about 1766 in Pennsylvania. This is where I get stuck, John is my 4th great grandfather he died in about 1850 in Monongalia County. John owned property on and around Indian Creek. Some of his property was located on the Monongalia and Marion County line. He also had a saw mill which he left to several son in his Will. He had 2 wives the 1st being Elizabeth Davis Smith having 7 children: Lewis, William, John Jr., Levi, Mary (married William Hess), Jane and Enoch. The 2nd wife was Catherine Hess Smith having 9 children: Elizabeth, Peter, Washington, Melinda "Millie" (married Justice Heck), Thomas, Riley, Rachel, Jackson and Catherine. I believe the only way to make progress from here is to connect with a Smith in this line. A Smith in a close family may know who John Smith's father was. Any information would be helpful and very much appreciated. Thank You!!!
