My Great Grandmother was Elizabeth JOhnston. She was born on 3rd June, 1871 in Belfast (now Port Fairy), Victoria, Australia. Her parents were Thomas Johnston and Matilda Law.
Thomas Johnston was born in Heligoland in 1831 and died in Belfast on24/3/1881. Elizabeth Johnston married Robert Wallace at Christ Church, Hawthorn, on 19th July, 1895. Elizabeth and Robert Wallace had 6 children - 5 sons and 1 daughter. The eldest son died between 1901 and 1903. Elizabeth died September 1936 and was cremated on 30/9/1936. Robert died on 8th March, 1938.
Matilda Law, aged 14 years, came to Australia on the ship "Persian" which arrived on 14th December, 1852.

Thank you 210256.

Will have another look at the records and update when I have some spare time.

The marriage records tell me Elizabeth JOHNSTON and Robert WALLACE were married in 1893. Reg #3884. I noticed you have the marriage as 1895. If this is not a typo error the marriage records must be wrong. Would appreciate you having another look at the marriage certificate if you have one.

I never did find the twins. They may have died young and no one bothered to register their deaths.

Thanks again.

Yes, you are right . I misread the 3 on the top of the certificate. All the other dates on the certificate are 1893.
When I visited the Church of England in Port Fairy (Belfast) about 20 years ago I found records for Thomas and James (the twins) birth.
About 10 years ago I visited the Victorian Records office. I had a very quick glance in the Wills & Probate section and found that Thomas Johnston, a Fisherman, of Belfast died on 24/3/1881 and that administration was granted to Matilda Johnston on 6th June, 1883. A, now deceased, cousin of my Dad's once told me that Thomas Johnston "fell off the pier and drowned". I don't know if that is true or not. I'll have to visit the Records Office again.
In a recent online search I found that Matilda Johnston, maiden name Law, died in Hawthorn in 1900. Her Mother was Elizabeth Law.

Are you able to tell me why and when Thomas Johnston came to Australia? Also why did Matilda come to Australia so young?
Many thanks.
