1903 Henry Arthur Calladine of St Anns, Nottingham

Journal by Dave Calladine

I am the direct descendant (grandson) of Henry Arthur Millington Calladine - eldest of 7 children of Henry Millington Calladine (April 19, 1876 - November 7, 1949) and Edith Mills(April 9, 1882 - ). He was born into the new terrace house suburb of Snienton east of the city of Nottingham.

Henry Calladine (4 on my ahnentafel) was born into a mining community. Henrys father Henry was working with coal too.
born was born October 29, 1903 in Basford Nottinghamshire, and died 1957. He married NELLIE FULLER October 3, 1925 in St Savouiers, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, daughter of ALFRED FULLER and EMILY BIRCHENOUGH. She was born October 20, 1898, and died November 1, 1976.

Henry changed his name to Arthur to get into the 1st world war, where he prematurly joined the Black Watch, and was sent to Mesopotamia, and Palestine. He left the British army, an joined the Indian army as a Machine Gun Instructor until 1923, when he returned home.

Nellie appaerntly met her husband as he was attempting to find a room in her mothers boarding house. He was still in his Indian Army uniform, and tanned somewhat, looking like some some absurb carpet salesman, so she slamed the door in his face and said not today thankyou the first time they met.

They married on October 3, 1925, at St Savouiers, Nottingham. and Henry had numerous farm jobs up to the mid thirties, when he establishe an exotic fruit and Vegtable merchants in Colwick Road, Nottingham. He reverted back to his name Henry in 1939 to join the second world war, and was a machine gun instructor in the RAF.

Being ground crew, he was sad at not having been on a mission, and so swapped places with a Royal Australian AF tail gunner for a run on Hamburg. The Wellington was hit and crash dived over Norfolk on its return journey. Grandad was left hanging about in a tree for three days, injured, but because of his switch, thought to be AWOL. When he was found, the stomach injury ended his RAF service, and he returned to the shop.

Children of HENRY CALLADINE and NELLIE FULLER are:
2. i. IVY CALLADINE.

3. ii. ERIC CALLADINE, b. October 9, 1927, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England.

4. iii. ELIZABETH MARY CALLADINE, b. January 16, 1929.
