Could you please tell me who was Sarah's mother? I am descended from Peter Hough's relationship with Susannah Tillet also a convict.

My great great grandmother was Eliza Hough. http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=prkirby&id=I1987 She grew up in Richmond, married and had 8 children there before moving to Tamworth. Maybe a relative. I really haven't done very much research and the living rels don't know anything about the Hough's.

More useless info. but it might help in your search. William Onus the son of Ann Eather and Joseph Onus married an Ann Hough. They had 'The Fat Sheep' hotel in Richmond around 1840.

I'll keep in touch. By the way our family pronounced it Huff and some people spelt it that way. According to an old friend of my mother's who belonged to the National Trust. She and several generations of her family (Paul/Paull) lived in Richmond. She told my mother that the local's called William Onus and his wife Ann who had The Fat Sheep hotel, 'Huff and Puff.'not aussie humour but because Will Onus was full of himself.

I've been speaking to my mother (Betty Eather) she's harbouring all these wonderful stories. She's in her 80's now so I'd better write them all down. I wish I'd have done this years ago.

There are only 4 of us decended from Eliza that I know of. Myself, my mother and her brother and sister. Through Alfred McAlpin Eather b:1863,my great grandfather.Eliza died when McAlpin( as he was always called) was only 7yrs.old 1870 and Charles Eather remarried Martha Ridge in 1876.
McAlpin married Theresa Lovelee b:1865 of Narrabri and my grandfather, Charles Colin Eather was born at the Exchange hotel in Boggabri in 1894. 4 yrs later after giving birth to twins Theresa died (the twins died too). As soon as the funeral was over McAlpin left town never to be seen again. Colin was left in the care of his step grandmother. SO, because McAlpin was not spoken about therefore his family wasn't either. UNTIL NOW.When Colin came home from the first war he went up to Narrabri for an inheritance of some sort from Charles but found that Martha Eather had given it to her 2 children by Charles, so he came back and never spoke of it again. This has little to do with the Hough's but it explains why we know little about them. Carolyn, could you please give me Peter Hough's and Mary Wood's birth and death dates. Was Mary Wood a convict?

by janilye on 2008-10-14 12:43:52

Never mind Carolyn. I got lucky and found it all.
Just one question was Peter Hough born in England and Christened in france or born and christened in France.
Regards,
Jan.

Jan,
I have Peter Hough born in France 1776 but I often see England as well.He was christened RC and buried by the Catholics on 19/3/1833.
Yes Mary Wood came from 2 convicts John Wood and Ann Matthews.Got a lot of their history from Richmond/Windsor Pioneer Register.

I found this in rootsweb.ancestry.com
Name: Peter HOUGH
Given Name: Peter
Surname: Hough
arr.26Jul.1799Sdney,convict,ship'Hillsborough'
Sex: M
Birth: 1775
Christening: rob.batised aris,France
Death: 17 MAR 1833 in Richmond,NSW,Aust.
Burial: 19 MAR 1833 C.of E.St.Peters Church Cemt.Richmond,NSW,Aust.
Marriage 1 Mary WOOD b: 26 DEC 1793 in Parramatta,NSW,Aust c: 1 JAN 1794 in C.of E.St.Johns Church,Parramatta,NSW,Aust.
Married: 19 SEP 1809 in C.of E.St.Phillips Church,Sydney,NSW,Aust.
I doubt he was a practicing catholic if he married in the C.of E. and his children weren't catholic.
There's so much conflicting infomation about. Some say he was born in Paris some say England.
I do know for a fact that Elisa Hough is buried in St.Peter's church of England cemetery because Sarah McAlpin Eather wanted to be buried beside her beloved sister-in-law, which she is and her husband Thomas Eather is beside her. I was there many years ago and don't recall where the other Hough's were. My aunt lives close by I'll ask her to have a look.
Also, I see that his other two 'marriages' to Tillett and Rigby were de facto which was not unusual for the times. Is this true?

Maybe his children were catholic??
I found 2 Hough's buried at the Windsor Catholic cemetery. One is John the son of John and Margaret nee McGuire.d:13/12/1873. That must be one of Peter's grandsons. Here's the link
http://www.hawkesbury.net.au/cemetery/windsor_catholic/index.html
Might be worth having a look around the other ones too.
