Look for Information on the ELY family

Journal by jhansird

My daughter married into the ELY family way back when. The children and grandchildren request that I do some research and let them know where and how they happen into this world with a name as simple as ELY. As it turns out there is quite a bit of information but very little about the people. From appearances they started in this country (USA) in Connecticut, to North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi. From there they sprayed themselves all over the USA. I am looking from information about the individuals. If anyone has any information I would appreciate the help. Thanks, Jim H.

There are at least two Ely family groups. There is the Ely family from England and there is the Eley, sometimes seen Ely, family from Germany.

The English Ely line is documented in two major books that I am aware of:

The Ely Family Ancestry: lineage of Richard Ely of Plymouth, England who came to Boston, Mass., about 1655 & settled at Lyme, Conn. in 1660. Vanderpoel, George B., editor; collected by Moses S. Beach, Rev. William Ely, DD. New York: The Calument Press; 1902. I believe it is this line that goes back to about the time of William the Conqueror and Ulthred de Elie.

The line of Richard's brother John Ely is documented in:

An Historical Narrative of the Ely, Revell, and Stacye Families, by Reuben P, Warren S. and Daniel B. Ely. Published by Fleming H. Revell Co., 1910.

So you'd need to get back to at least around the turn of the 20th century to make a connection into one or the other of these books.

There are some Ely family trees online that attempted to replicate the lines documented in the Ely, Revell and Stacye book.
