Looking for any Cantwells out there.

Query by kkcantwell

Hello, my name is Kevin Cantwell, born 1946 in Southgate London, and have lived all my life in UK. I have lived near Bedford since marrying wife Joan Webb in 1971. We have three daughters and two grandchildren.
My father Thomas Nicolas Patrick Cantwell was born in Wood Green in London, in 1909. He married Mary Sunderland in 1935. His father Thomas Augustine Cantwell was born in Clonmel Tipperary Eire in 1872, and after marrying Mary Josephine Tunney in Dublin in 1900, they soon emigrated to London, where he died in 1946. They had 7 children.
The father of Thomas Augustine was Edward Cantwell JP, who was born at Holycross nr. Thurles Tipperary in 1814. He subsequently moved to Clonmel c1834, and married Catherine Carroll in 1853 at Kilsheelan.
They had three sons and five daughters.
During his life he became an Alderman and was Mayor of Clonmel in 1873/4, 1881/2, 1887 and 1895. He died in 1899 in Clonmel.
My wife and I have been to Ireland three times in the past few years and are going again this year. I have researched my family history on each visit, and hope to find out more this summer.
I have been to the USA in 2005, and travelled coast to coast by rail on a wonderful holiday. I have a Sunderland relative (my Mothers side of the family) still living in California.

All my Cantwell's seem to have come from Clough, County Kilkenny, Ireland however there is a strong Tipperary connection with the Cantwell surname.

Click on CANTWELL at the bottom of your journal to be taken to a surname wiki page that I created in my capacity as Editor.

Cheerio,
Alison
from Oz.

Hi Janet, I am sorry but I do not know of any boxing connection with the Tunney family. Good luck with your research. Have you tried contacting
www.irish-roots.ie for Irish family history?
Regards, Kevin Cantwell.

Hi Kevin,
I have just discovered your request. I am researching Cantwells from Tipperary in Ireland and believe there maybe a link to Edward Cantwell Mayor of Clonmel. On of his sons was Rev Nicholas Cantwell who was born in Feb served in St. Laurence O'Toole parish in Dublin

Sorry Kevin

The message went before I had time to finish it.Rev Nicholas Cantwell born Feb 1867 to Edward Cantwell and Catherine Carroll in Clonmel attended Clongowes Wood college before entering the seminary at Holy Cross College, Clonliffe. He was ordained 30 Oct 1892. His first appointment was as Curate to Balrothery/Balbriggan from 1892-1895. He then moved as curate to St. Laurence O'Tooles from 1896-1924. His next appointment was as parish priest of Ballymore eustace, Co. Kildare and he was there from 1924-1935. He was made canon of the Metropolitan Chapter in 1930. Fr. Nicholas died 11 Jan 1935. I believe Nicholas had a sister a nun in the Mercy Convent in Tipperary town in 1922 but I have yet to find out more about her. I have two letters sent to her by an Edgar Cantwell of Colarado in 1922 which I found in my Grandfather Edward John Cantwell's scrapbook so I guess there mmust be a family connection. This family is almost certainly descended from a brother of Walter Cantwell born abt 1740-1750 and who married Margaret Phelan. Walter and Margaret had 9 children one of whom was the Rev. Nicholas Cantwell of Tramore, Co. Waterford. I am trying to find the link to my own family as I know that Rev. Nicholas Cantwell of Tramore was a cousin of my Great Grandfather Daniel Cantwell.

I am new to Family Circles and would love to make contact with you by email but am not sure how to proceed
