.. The death is announced of an early settler in the person of Mr Henry Dryden, of Wellington, who passed away at his residence, "Craigielea" Karori, on Saturday afternoon. The late Mr Dryden will be greatly missed by a very large circle of friends throughout the Dominion. Born in Linlithgow, Scotland, he, after receiving his education and serving his apprenticeship to his trade, came to New Zealand in the ship 'Pladda' in April 1860, arriving at Port Chalmers in August of that year. After spending some time in Dunedin and the Otago goldfields, he came to Wellington, where has resided practically ever since. In the year 1874, when the well-known firm of W. Booth and Co., timber merchants, started business in Wellington, Mr Dryden was appointed manager and representative and remained in their service until 1904, when he retired from business. Mr Dryden for some years was a member of the Karori Borough Council and also interested himself in educational matters, being a member of the committee of the Karori School for many years. He was also an early member of the Karori Bowling Club. Mr Dryden, who was twice married, has left a widow and family of five. His family, all of whom are children of his first wife, are: Mr H. E. Dryden, Wallace street, Karori; Mrs Alec Ramsay, Hastings; Mrs Wakeford Cox, Shanghai; Mrs Zoe Simpson, Bournemouth, England and Mrs F. Young, Rotorua. His youngest daughter, Miss Lena Dryden, died six years ago. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren. His funeral will leave his residence at 10 a.m. to-morrow for St Mary's Anglican Churchyard, Karori.

1 July 1921 Death of Frances Sarah DRYDEN - A very old and respected resident of Karori passed away yesterday in the person of Mrs Henry Dryden, sen., widow of the late Mr Henry Dryden, "Craigielea" Karori. Mrs Dryden, who was 75 years of age, had been in poor health for some weeks past and took to her bed on Saturday last, but her death yesterday came as a shock to her immediate friends. The late Mr Henry Dryden, who died in 1918, was for many years manager of Messrs W. Booth and Company's timber yard in the city and he and Mrs Dryden, who was his second wife, had been well-known residents of Karori for many years. There were no children of the marriage, but a step-son, Mr Harry Dryden, is a resident of Karori and there are four step-daughters - Mrs Cox of Shanghai; Mrs Simpson in England; Mrs Young of Rotorua and Mrs Ramsay of Hastings. The funeral took place this afternoon

NZ Times, 16 Aug 1895 A large number of friends of Mr Henry Dryden (manager if Booth and Co., sawmillers), assembled on the wharf yesterday to wish his daughter, Miss Alice Dryden, bon voyage. Miss Dryden is on her way to Shanghai to be married to Mr W. W. Cox, of the South British Insurance Company, who will be remembered in Wellington in connection with the Hunt Club. Miss Dryden will be accompanied as far as Sydney by her father, As the Manapouri moved away from the wharf the expressions for her future happiness were very cordial. Miss Dryden will be much missed, as she was exceedingly popular with a large circle of acquaintances

* In Dec 1892 Zoe was in Standard IV at Karori School and won 2nd prize for writing. She was also voted the most popular girl. In Feb 1890 she was a 4th year Pupil Teacher at Karori. She had a 'sweet voice' and in Sep 1894 she sang 'Auld Robin Gray' at the Wellington Opera House with the Wellington Caledonian Society at their annual concert. She resigned from teaching in 1894 just prior to her marriage.

25 Nov 1913 - Death of Simon Dryden (Mary Louisa's father)
Mr Simon Dryden, an old Wellington resident, who had been working in his Bidwell street, greenhouse in Bidwell-street yesterday morning and appeared then to be in his usual health, died suddenly in a tramcar in the afternoon. His body was conveyed home and Dr Mackin, who was immediately summoned, found that death was in all probability due to heart failure, there being no signs of any other disease.
For some years Mr Dryden had been attended for heart trouble by Dr McGavin, who told his sons that he might due suddenly at any time. Mr Dryden, who was born in Sunderland on 29th June 1824, arrived in Wellington in 1855 and started in business with the late Mr Edward Thirkell, as shipwrights, laying down a small slip on the beach from Old Customhouse-street, just in front of where Robertson's foundry now stands. After some years of successful business operation, he sold out and took up land in Queen Charlotte Sound, where he carried on farming for ten or twelve years, returning to Wellington in 1879, where h has since resided.
In the early days, with his friend Mr Thirkell, he walked down from Wanganui, before the time of coaches or trains, to look at land, but did not take up any, although the best was there on offer at 10s per acre, because there were no roads and the land in the Sound was chosen in preference as it could be reached by boat. He aquired some properties before leaving Wellington; among others, a section in Cuba-street, where Mr W. P. Barber;s shop now is, but eventually sold it cut.
Mr Dryden leaves a widow, three sons, Arthur (Picton) (Arthur William 1857-1941), C. H. (Brooklyn) (Charles Henry 1860-1943), F. A. (Karori) (Frederick Albert 1862-1947) and two daughters, Mrs H. E. Dryden (Karori) (Mary Louisa as above) and Mrs C. E. Tustin (Christchurch), seventeen grandchildren and one great-grandchild

Dominion, 28 Feb 1916 - marriage of Henry's grandson A quiet wedding was performed at the Thorndon Methodist Church on Saturday, February 12, by the Rev C. S. Cook, when Mr Orland Dryden (manager of the Excelsior Supply Co., Ltd) and eldest son of H. E. Dryden of Karori, was married to Miss E. M. Lynott, second daughter of the late mr Charles Lynott of St Kilda, Melbourne, Victoria. The bride, who wore a travelling costume of brown cloth, trimmed with pink applique and a hat of shell pink crepe de chene, with black panne, was given away by Mr Henry Dryden of "Craigielea" Karori. The groomsman was Mr Leslie Dryden, brother of the bridegroom and the bridesmaid was miss Dryden, sister of the bridegroom. After the wedding ceremony was performed the wedding party left for Miss Tendall's tea rooms, where morning tea was served and later the bride and bridegroom left for their future home

Dominion, 4 Dec 1918 - Henry's Burial The remains of the late Mr Henry Dryden were interred in St Mary's churchyard, Karori, yesterday morning. The chief mourners were Messrs H. E. Dryden (son), Orlando Dryden (grandson) and A. P. Dryden (Chief Postmaster, Wellington, nephew) and among those who attended to pay a last tribute of respect to their old friend and associate were the Mayor of Karori (Mr Burn), members of the Borough COuncil and staff and members of the Karori Bowling Club. The Rev G. Y. Woodward officiated at the church and at the graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs Burns, Dix, laurenson and Randall

24 May 1919 - Death of Mary Ann Dryden (Mary Louisa's mother)
The death is announced of an old and respected Wellington resident in the person of Mrs S. Dryden, who passed away at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr H. E. Dryden, Karori. The late Mrs Dryden came to New Zealand from Sunderland, England, in the year 1855 and after residing for some years in Picton and Queen Charlotte Sound, went to Wellington, where she had resided ever since.
Mrs Dryden has left a family of three sons and two daughters, all of whom are married, also sixteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her husband, Mr Simon Dryden, predeceased her about six years ago.
