Hello I think your Grandmother was married to my Grandfather Charles Francis (Frank) Helman. I was looking at his military papers and it stated that that he married Nellie Alice Rendall from Buxton Rd Weymouth on 24 Oct 1918 at the Holy Trinty Church at Weymouth. It also stated he father was George and that he was a Police Constable.

My grandfather apparently brought her out to Melbourne Australia in 1918 as a war bride and I believe she had a son but I don't know his name. My grandfather left her and I have no information on what happened to her or her child.

My grandfather subsequently entered into a defacto relationship and had 8 more children. He called himself Frank Edwards and lived in Sydney. He died in 1969.

So I may not be able to help with your research but I think you may be able to fill in some gaps in my. Is it possible that your father or an uncle was her first son from her marriage to my grandfather?

cheers
China Rose

Dear China_Rose
Thanks for your update. Charles did in fact marry my grandmother. It is believed that Nellie left England in c1921 for Australia with her husband Charles Helman as a war bride. During the voyage it is alleged that Charles took up with another passenger and left her stranded upon arrival in Melbourne. Her father contacted Reginald McCurdy(whom the family had met during his rehabilitation in Weymouth) and asked him to take care of Nellie and her baby son William (who unfortunately passed away in 1939 due to peritonitis and is buried in the Wagga Wagga Monumental Cemetery). Nellie and Reginald settled in Wagga Wagga and through a partnership of some 50yrs raised their family of nine boys. I have been unable to find any record of Nellie coming into Australia but believe she came out on the "Gaika" with other wives. According to my father, Charles came to the family home in Wagga Wagga in 1841/2. Following a chat with my dad, Albert, he left believing that Nellie was married to Reginald.
I have ascertained from the New South Wales BMD record 9810/1942 that Charles married Gwenyth Gentle in Sydney.
Nellie passed away on 27/10/1968 and is also buried in the Wagga Wagga Monumental Cemetery.

Hoping this information helps with your research.
