My great grandfather was George Jennings, a harness maker in the Akron/Barberton area. Born abt 1848 in either England or Canada. (Depends on who was answering the census taker!)
I know he married Jennie (or Jane) Wickens and emigrated to Ohio in about 1870. The census for 1880 has check marks randomly down the page, which I think indicate who was answering the questions. In this case, great granddad seems to have been the one, and Canada was indicated as his place of birth and England for his parents.
I found a Canada census for 1851 (Canada West, York County, King Township) with a family which includes Joseph age 26 and Elizabeth age 21 and Edward 2. Also in the household are Benjamin, 50 Mary, 50 Thomas, 13 George 12 (too young to be my great grand) and John Henry 10.
My guess is that Joseph and the younger children are of Benjamin and Mary, and that Elizabeth is Joseph's wife, and Edward their son?
I am so frustrated. It's like my great granddad came by spaceship from Mars!
