the DEATH of ELIZABETH RUSS (nee Satherley) as reported in the NELSON EVENING MAIL, 9 July 1878:
... A sudden death occurred on Saturday last at Waimea West. Mrs Russ, the wife of Mr Job Russ, the recent purchaser of the Bearcroft property, while engaged in moving the furniture into their new house, slipped in the verandah and fell, and in doing so it seems that she inflicted upon herself some internal injury. She complained of feeling unwell, and was in some pain, but it was not thought that anything serious was the matter until Saturday, when Mr Waring was sent for. On arriving at the house he at once saw that she was in danger, and returned to Richmond to telegraph for Dr Farrelle, but an hour later she expired. Mr and Mrs Russ had been residents in Waimea West for considerably over 25 years, and, together with their family of seven sons, have always been looked up to as respectable, industrious, and valuable settlers.

May I please correct the fact that Elizabeth Satherley, wife of Job Russ, died in an accident. It was a "sudden death" which one could easily construe as an accident, or perhaps researchers have confused it with Hannah Russ's death (wife of William Russ) in a cart accident, a year later in the same area.
The record of Elizabeth Satherley's natural death is in the Colonist, under Sudden Death from The Marlborough Express, Sat July 13, 1878.
The record of Hannah's death is in the Colonist from Nelson Evening Mail, 18 Feb 1887.
I am a Russ descendant (grand daughter of Milton Frederick Russ 1909-1981) and would welcome any help or corrections in charting beyond Robert Russ on the Russ side and beyond John Wright (1800-1884) and Eliza Davies (1819-1887).
thankyou for that lilcav
I have also updated the journal a little with extra info from that known when first posted 2? years ago
Hi, do you know the parentage of Sarah Gifford? An ancestor of mine Jacob Gifford around the same age was born in Kingsbury, Episcopi and migrated to Nelson in 1842. His father's name was Isaac Gifford who named Jacob in his will. The Gifford's owned orchards around the Stembridge area.
Kind Regards,
Jared
