IMMIGRANT SHIPS to WELLINGTON 1839-1899

Journal by ngairedith

Below is a list of immigrant ships with the arrival dates to Wellington, New Zealand up until December 1899 that I HAVEN'T GOT passenger lists for.
If a ship is not listed here, please assume I have a list ...

I am interested only in the WELLINGTON district arrivals at this time, although they may have called at other ports first. Do you know of any passengers that arrived on these vessels or have you found a passenger list for them ...
I would appreciate your help - thank you

p = I have only a partial list, please send anything you have

EUTERPE - left London 25.10.1891, arrived Wellington 8.2.1882
A MESSAGE RECEIVED 28 August 2010 from Charles A "Chuck" BENCIK. I retired from San Diego Maritime Museum as Librarian in 2002. During my 5 years in that job I discovered that in the book "Star of India Log of an Iron Ship" (a book about the immigrant ship Euterpe by Jerry MacMullen - first printed 1961), that he made a mistake: the voyage listed in the appendix in the back as "London - [dep] Oct. 19, '81 - [To] Wellington [Returned to] Liverpool" did not happen as listed. Euterpe did not go to Wellington and never did arrive at Wellington in February of 1882. Euterpe instead went to Sydney, Australia, then to Newcastle, Australia, to San Francisco, then to London, returning around 1st March 1884. The story of that voyage (I wrote it) is in the Maritime Museum's Quarterly, "Mains'l Haul", entitled ?A Tragic Chapter Revealed? Vol. 33:No. 4: pages 32-39. If you want to find names of persons who sailed on Euterpe/Star of India, simply go to this site: the EUTERPE/Star of India Index
Incidentally, the library at the Maritime Museum in San Diego has a complete collection of all the newspapers from the various ports she sailed to, to which immigrants arrived and each paper gives a list of passenger names and other details about those voyages. The Librarian's name is Dr. Kevin Sheehan and he is a very friendly Aussie. Good Luck!
NOTES - the San Diego Maritime Museum is home to the sailing ships, steam yachts and schooners of yesteryear that will entertain and educate all visitors. The San Diego Maritime Museum houses historic ships, models, artifacts and exhibits about the history of the sea and the fishing and commercial ships of San Diego

OCEAN MAIL - 2.2.1874 - Brought 323 immigrants (245 adults). 5 children died of whooping cough & also had 3 cases of scarlatina on board. At one o'clock the Luna went off, having the health officer and the immigration officer and others on board. On reaching the Ocen Mail and hearing the report she was not boarded but was ordered into quarantine immediately and was towed over to Somes Island. A good deal of anxiety was evinced when it was seen from town that the yellow jack was run up to the masthead but by 7pm people were relieved to hear that the disease was not of a more serious character. Fresh provisions were sent on board for the comfort of the immigrants and the passengers were finally landed from quarantine 9th Feb

I'm interested in ships photos/pictures.

Avalanche

My mother-in-law's HUGHES came out on the Avalanche from Kent, England. They even named their 7th child who was born and died on the ship 'Avalanche'. A common practice.

The HARRIS' in my tree came out on Slains Castle.

Thank you Ally,
The AVALANCHE is very useful - the only Slains Castle I can find on that yesteryears link was for 1841

The emigrants collection online - Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa

Site has a painting by William Allsworth depicting James Mackay and family in Scotland, shortly before they emigrated to Nelson, New Zealand via the chartered ship Slaines Castle.

Finally found the actual passenger list of assisted immigrants!

Avalanche 1875

Left Gravesend on 22 October, 1874 and arrived at New Plymouth on 21 January, 1875.

Think you should have a separate journal. Thank you for your time and efforts.

For ngairedith and all who looked at my first posting:

I am going to FamilyTreeCircles and asking that the Moderator delete, that is to say, remove totally the first submission I sent. I confused two of the voyages of the Ramsey IOM iron hull 1863 EUTERPE, claiming that part of the material in the Euterpe page was flawed. That is possibly still the case, in my mind, but I have to be more clear, and do more research into my survey of her logs and papers before I put out any comprehensive claims about our EUTERPE.

I feel very sure that EUTERPE, "our EUTERPE/launched 1863 at Ramsey IOM," made a London Voyage departure October 19, 1881, to Wellington, and that she subsequently went to Lyttelton, Dunkirk, and finally arrived at London on Sept. 7, 1882.

Her next voyage in late 1882 and 1883 was to Sydney and Newcastle, AUS, and NOT to Wellington, NZ, as published by MacMullen.

That voyage began from London on Oct. 9, 1882 and she made a stop at Plymouth for additional passengers and the usual medical inspections, then arrived at Sydney harbor Feb. 6, 1883; was placed in quaranteen due to a very bad outbreak of scarlet fever and the deaths of 10 persons aboard, including the ship's steward; sailed March 16, 1883 for Newcastle, clearing Sydney Heads on 19.3.1883; departed Newcastle 27.4.1883 with 992 tons coal; was in San Francisco September 1883; and arrived at Liverpool March 3, 1884.

Readers of the MacMullen book, "Star of India, Log of an Iron Ship" need to be cautious about the Appendix, pp. 127 ff, entitled "VOYAGES AND MASTERS, EUTERPE/STAR OF INDIA" which is extremely flawed. In particular, MacMullen listed the destinaton of EUTERPE for her October 9, 1882 departure from London, as being to Wellington, thence to Liverpool. THIS DESTINATION OF WELLINGTON (expected to occur in 1883) was incorrect, and the record on that was only recently corrected. MacMullen's appendix is rife with names of masters misspelled, departure and arrival date errors, and arrival and departure port lists incomplete or simply in error. MacMullen's first edition was published in 1961, and a large amount of new material has been received on the career of 1863 Euterpe.

I direct all to my article in Maritime Museum of San Diego's quarterly, MAINS'L HAUL, Fall 1997 issue, p. 32 ff., entitled "A Tragic Chapter Revealed: EUTERPE's 1883 Voyage to Sydney."

My household is minus my better half at the moment, and I am rather tight with time, but I will post later, and attempt to reconcile the EUTERPE page of familytreecircles.com with our records in San Diego, as soon as I can this year.

My grandfather Niels Peter Nielsen arrived in Wellington 30 Dec 1889 on the Aorangi. He was single, age 18 & must have travelled from Denmark to London to catch the boat. In the next short while I plan to track down a copy of the Passengar List & will let you know when I have it.

My husband's great/great grandmother and her daughter came to Wellington on the "Hastings" on the 15/16 Feb 1858. The "Hastings" and other ships arriving in Wellington are listed om the website - angelfire.com/az/nzgenweb/ - but only a few small passenger lists are recorded. Also my husband's family appear on the trip out a year later - Oct 1859 - but that was not the case. A cousin of my husband has been trying for years to get a passenger list for the "Hastings" and so far the only one he has found was what i have mentioned above. Cheers, Judy

Aorangi: I have a passenger list for the Aorangi leaving London, UK on Nov 29, 1883 "for ports unknown" with my great grandparents Anthony Lewis and Louisa Elizabeth Lewis nee Prossor on board with four children from a previous marriage. Your list of arrivals in Wellington shows her first arrival as 17 Jan 1884. That would have been the same sailing. They arrived in time for Louisa to give birth to her first child in Napier on 26th Feb 1884 about 6 weeks later. It may have been the maiden voyage to New Zealand for this first ship called Aorangi. It was a combined steam and sail ship. This web site will have other lists as well. I hope you find it useful:

Hello Ngaire Edith

I know that you stated that you will have details of all ships not listed here. I do hope so, because I do wonder about one of the Zealandia's voyages. I know that passenger lists exist because I have details from them, but no sources were ever given. She sailed 4 October 1864 and arrived in Lyttelton 9 January 1865. Probably Gravesend was port of departure.

I think that I can now link the names previously given, but need more detail to prove this. I just cannot find, after hours of searching, any list for that voyage.

Can you please help?

Hi Meury, unfortunately, I too am still missing that list. The only lists I have of the Zealandia into Lyttelton are..

15 June 1858 arriving 20 Sep 1858
11 Aug 1859 arriving 12 Nov 1859
3 Feb 1862 arriving 23 May 1862
3 Sep 1863 arriving 8 Dec 1863
23 Sep 1870 arriving 23 Dec 1870
8 Sep 1871 arriving 09 Dec 1871

Which passengers are you particularly looking for?

Hi there I have a list for the ship 'Victory' that arrived in Wellington in May 1884. If interested I can email it through to you for upload. My family arrived on this ship, then carried on their journey via the Rotomahana to Port Chalmers.
