Comments
The name that we know as SCHRODER or SCHROEDER was originally written in German as SCHR?DER. The umlaut (the two dots over the o) is actually the remnants of the letter e that used to be written over the o. Thus in German the letter ? is totally equivalent to the combination oe. Similarly the other umlauted letters ? and ? are equivalent to ae and ue respectively.
So, when an ancestor named SCHR?DER arrived in Australia, most English speakers, being ignorant of the meaning of the umlaut would simply omit it and write the name as SCHRODER. The immigrant might write it as SCHROEDER (which is correct) or as SCHR?DER (which is also correct). We
can imagine, however, that it would be quite likely that the spelling
SCHR?DER to be wrongly recorded in official documents as SCHRODER.
Hopefully this might explain why two brothers, for example, might have their surnames spelled differently!
