OBITUARY: Frank "Frances" Nordheim - Union Gap, Wash. - A funeral for former Scottsbluff, NE, resident Frank "Frances" Violet Nordheim, 95, of Union Gap, who died Nov 1., 1988 in a nursing home here, will be at 1 P.M. Saturday in Shaw and Sons Memorial Chapel at Yakima with Pastor Melvin Teske officiating. Burial will be a a later time in West Hills Memorial Park, near Yakima.

A memorial has been established to the donor's choice.

She was born Oct 23, 1893 at Adams, Neb., to Frank and Molly (Bryson) Barmore. As a young girl she moved with her family to Canby, Ore., and lived there for six years. She later moved back to Adams where she was educated. She married Ray Braddock. She married Frank Nordheim. During her married years to her first husband, she farmed in Filly, Neb, later moving to Beatrice, NE, and on to Scottsbluff, NE where she worked as a seamstress. In 1970 she moved to Yakima to be with her family.

Survivors include her dauters Mrs. Miriam Martin of Yakima and Mrs. Wanda Choquette of Woodburn, OR; sister Mable Campbell of Albert Lea, MN, 13 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by both husbands, sons Darrell Braddock and Marvin braddock, two grandsons, three brothers and three sisters.

Obituary: Yakima, WA. Miriam Martin, Age 84, passed away on Aug. 15, 2000 surrounded by her family at Crescent Nursing home in Yakima.
She was born Nov 4, 1915 in Filley, NE, to Ray and Francis Braddock. After her marriage to Paul martin, they moved to the northwest, making their home in Yakima. In 1947 they opened the first of three paint stores on Yakima Avenue. They worked together and raised their family of three.
Miriam was an active member of the Eagles Auxiliary. She also helped organize the Eagles Auxiliary Northwest Bowling Tournament and was the secretary of that Tournament for 32 years. During that time she made many firends throughout the northwest and looked forward to forming lew leagues and bringing in new bowlers.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Paul Martin, and her daughter Barbara and her husband Bert Pederson of Vancouver, WA, and a son Robert and his wife Gisela Martin of Yakima. Seven grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Preceding her in death was her oldest son Paul Martin, Jr., two brothers and a sister.
She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, much loved by all her family. Her family was important to her and she will be deeply missed.
Services will be held at Langevin-Mussetter on Monday, August 21, 2000 at 12:00 PM. Committal will follow at West Hills Memorial Park.

From the History of Gage Co, NE at 878: JOHN BRADDOCK has proved himself energetic and forward-looking in his activities as a farmer and is one of the representative agriculturists and stock-growers of Filley Township, where his attractive homestead is situated in Section 13. He is a scion of a sterling pioneer family of the Hawkeye State and was born in Marshall County, Iowa, October 16, 1853, a son of Martin and Delilah (Lepley) Braddock, who were born and reared in Ohio, where their marriage was solemnized and whence they removed to Marshall County, where Martin Braddock entered claim to government land, perfected title to the same and developed a good farm, both he and his wife having there passed the remainder of their lives, the subject of this review having been the second of their eleven children, of whom eight are living. Martin Braddock made the overland trip to Iowa with team and wagon and on his arrival his available capital was represented in the sum of sixty-five cents. By energy and good management as a pioneer farmer, he achieved independence and well merited prosperity. His polital support was given to the Democratic party. His wife having been a member of the Christian church. Martin Braddock was a son of William Braddock who was born in New England, of sterling colonial ancestry, his father having come to America from England. William Braddock became a pioneer in Ohio, where he and his wife passed the residue of their lives. John Lepley, maternal grandfather of the subject of this sketch, was born in Pennsylvania and was a resident of Ohio for many years prior to his death.
John Braddock acquired his early education in the public schools of his native county and there continued his association with agricultural pursuits until 1883, when he came to Gage County, Nebraska, and purchased one hundred and sixty acres of land, of which sixty-five acres had been broken, a small house having been erected on the place. Since that time he has erected escellent farm buildings and made other improvements, besides which he has added to the area of his farm estate until he now has a valuable property of two hundred and forty acres, devoted to diversified agriculture and to the raising of good livestock, including white-faced cattle that are bred largely from registered stock. He is liberal and progressive as a citizen and in politics he gives his allegiance to the Democratic Party.
In 1885, Mr. Braddock wedded Miss Sarah Woods, who was born in Johnson Co, Iowa, and whose death occured in February 1893. She is survived by two sons, Ray and Frank, both active young exponents of farm enterprise in Gage County. In 1900 was recorded the marriage of Mr. Braddock to Miss Edna May Hogle, who was, like himself, born in Marshall County, Iowa, and they have three daughters - Bessie, Blanche, and Marjorie - all members of the United Brethren Church. Mrs. Edna Braddock is a birthright member of the Society of Friends, and Mr. Braddock is affiliated with the lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons in the village of Filley.

Frank's obituary describes his life as follows: His boyhood was spent on the family homestead southwest of Adams, where he grew to manhood, getting his schooling in books in the district school of Adams, and in the sterner school of work and experience he studied on his father's farm where he and his younger Brother, Will, much earlier than most boys, shouldered a large share of man's work and responsibility, because of a lame father, who was unable to follow a team or do many of the other tasks on a farm.

In the fall of 8887, the family moved to eastern Colorado, where they took a homestead, but, finding the climate too arid for rarming, they returned to Adams.

In the winter of 1890-91 he was converted and with his wife, who had previously been a probationary member, he united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which he has ever since been a faithful and consistent member.

The years 1900 to 1907 were spent by the family in the Willamette Valley in Oregon.

DAVID BRADDOCK is one of the esteemed citizens, prosperous men, and able Justices of the Peace of South Branch Precinct. His home is upon section 24, and stands upon a farm of 160 acres. His father, Marton Braddock, was born in Knox County, Ohio, in the year 1823, and was there an extensive land-owner and successful farmer. His wife, Delilah (Lepley) Braddock, was born near the same place in 1828.
The great-grandfather of our subject came from England, and settled in Virginia in Colonial days, and served under Gen. Washington in the Revolutionary War, being one of the first to enter, and continuing until the end of the chapter. His son William, the grandfather of our subject, was born in Virginia, and continued there throughout his life.
The father of our subject moved with his family from Ohio to Mahaska, Iowa, in the year 1850, and staid for eighteen months, and was one of the pioneers. At the end of that period he removed to Marshall County in the same State, and in the spring of 1852 entered 160 acres of land, and is a wealthy citizen, now owning 400 acres of well-stocked and finely improved land. His dwelling cost him $8,000, and all the other buildings in proportion. He is a well-informed citizen, and sustains a reputation for liberality. His family circle includes eleven children, whose names are as follows: David, John, Mary, Martha, William, Anginora, Lizzie, James F., Harvey T., Anna and Edward.
The subject of our sketch was born in Knox County, Ohio, on the 3d of June, 1850. With his father he went to Iowa upon his removal to that State, and continued to live with his parents until he attained his majority. He attended the classes of his school of the district, and also took a course of instruction at Albion Seminary in 1871 and 1872. In 1874 he took a trip across the plains, through Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah, Montana, Colorado and Iowa, and then began farming near his old home, continuing the same until 1879. Then he came to this county, and located upon the farm he now occupies. The ground was entirely unimproved, and in a thoroughly native condition. His residence and farm buildings are worthy of mention, the groves of shade and forest trees cover seven acres, the orchard comprising about 230 excellent bearing trees, besides numerous other works and improvements.
While a resident of Marietta, Iowa, Mr, Braddock was joined in matrimony with Dora M. Ritenour on the 27th of February, 1879. This lady is the daughter of William and Daphna M. Taft, who were natives, of Vermont and Ohio respectively, and were married in the latter State. Her father was by occupation a farmer, and at the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted from Ohio, and died at Murfreesboro, Tenn. Her mother is now living in Lincoln County, Neb. She is the mother of four children -- Vestina, Willis, George and Dora. The latter was born on the 28th of April, 1863, in Knox County, Ohio. There have been born to Mr, and Mrs. Braddock four children -- Jennessie, William H., John and Odessa. Mrs. Braddock is a member of the Christian Church, but usually attends that of the Presbyterian persuasion, as being more convenient to her home. Mr. and Mrs. B. are everywhere much esteemed asworthy members of society. Our subject is a member of the K. of P., and usually attends the lodge at Syracuse. He is a Democrat stanch and true, heartily supporting the principles and ticket of the party. For eight years he was a member of the School Board, and since January last has filled the chair of Justice of the Peace.

WILLIAM BRADDOCK, deceased, pioneer and one of the most prominent figures in the development and settlement of Dawes county, was for years one of the best known ranchmen and cattle breeders in western Nebraska, where he gained a high reputation for his introduction of thoroughbred cattle, being one of the first men in this section to realize that well bred stock paid the best. He won marked success with the able assistance of his wife who for years was the one whom he consulted in business matters.
Mr. Braddock was born December 26, 1858, near Marshalltown, Iowa, the son of Martin and Deliah (Lepley) Braddock both natives of Knox county, Ohio, the father being of English and the mother of Pennsylvania Dutch descent. William was the fifth child in a family of eleven children, consisting of six boys and five girls. His father moved to Marshalltown, Iowa, in 1850, and homesteaded the farm where he lived the rest of his life. William was reared in the country, and worked on the farm in his younger days so that his school privileges were limited, but he came of stock that was thrifty and industrious and laid the foundation in his youth for the great accomplishments of after years. The school that taught him most was that of experience and he learned well. He first earned money as a young boy and early learned its value. Mr. Braddock remained at home most of the time until the. fall of 1884. He had already heard of the great opportunities open for a young man with grit and energy in the western part of Nebraska and came that year by rail to Valentine, the end of the road at the time, then joined a company of freighters to go the rest of the way. They reached Beaver valley on Thanksgiving day and Mr. Braddock often spoke of that memorable day and the beautiful appearance of the valley. He took a pre-emption at once which is still the property of his widow and heirs. As soon as possible Mr. Broddock built a dugout on his claim and prepared to pass the winter of 1884-95. In the spring he went over onto Bordeaux creek to get lumber for some building as there was a small saw mill then owned by G. W. Messenger. The distance was only about twelve miles but on the trip a hard snow storm came up and covered all the landmarks so that Mr. Braddock became lost and wandered in the white waste for two days before finding his dugout. That was a hard winter as the snow was the deepest ever known in this section and it laid three feet on a level from December to spring. One of the amusing experiences told by Mr. Braddock was of his winter in the dugout. He was lonely as neighbors were far apart and few and he did not trust the few prowling Indians as he believed they resented the settlers coming in and taking their hunting grounds, though they lived on a reservation. He spent many wakeful nights and heard many queer noises and after weeks of anxiety found that some sand mice had been carrying corn from his supplies up to a human skull that he had found on the prairie and kept on a shelf. After that he slept better. With the spring Mr. Braddock broke some of his land and farmed a little, took up a homestead and later a tree claim. The tree claim was some distance from his other land and he found it impractible (sic) to handle and finally sold it, that being the only piece of land of which he disposed in his many years of ranch life. As soon as he made a little money Mr. Braddock would buy some cattle brand them and turn them out on the range. In the fall he would join in the round up with the large cattle owners and bring his cattle back to the home range. He kept doing this year after year until he had a large herd.
March 28, 1899, Mr. Braddock married Miss Julia Anna Jacobson, who was born near Nevada, Iowa, the daughter of John H. and Dora (Tow) Jacobson, both of Scandinavian descent. in the spring of 1885, the Jacobsen family came to Sheridan county, Nebraska, and took a pre-emption northwest of Rushville, seven miles, where they lived twenty years then moved near Mullen, Hooker county and continued in the ranch business. Mrs. Braddock went through the common schools and was teaching at the age of sixteen. Later she attended the Rushville high school. She received only twenty-five dollars a month but invested what money she could in calves each year and when she was married added twenty head of fine cows to her husband's large herd. Of this accomplishment she was justly proud. After her marriage they worked harder than ever as both she and her husband toiled early and late. They attained a remarkable success however, and she feels that they were well repaid, as at one time they had twenty-five hundred head of cattle before the free range was done away with. After that the owners sold many cattle and kept smaller herds. Mr. Braddock was one of the first men to see far ahead and realize that irrigation was to be the great thing in western Nebraska and built nine miles of ditches on his ranch, as he had the priority water rights from Beaver creek along which his land streched (sic) for fourteen miles. His entire ranch is fenced with four wires and cross fenced with posts every rod so that that (sic) his improvements were some of the best in the west. The Braddock ranch has five hundred acres of alfalfa which is usually cut three times a season, two hundred acres are native wheat grass meadow which usually cuts three hundred tons of hay per year, and the ranch is one of the best located and most beautiful in the state, lying in the beautiful Beaver and White river valleys. It stands as an enduring monument to the man and woman who spent so many years of their life here, reclaiming the virgin prairie to productive farm purposes. In 1908, Mr. Braddock bought his first registered Herefords, gradually worked out of grades and into pure bred cattle. At the heighth (sic) of his career he died, January 7, 1917, a great loss to his community and mourned by all who knew him.

After her husband's death, Mrs. Branddock (sic) with undaunted courage assumed the full control of her husband's business and has made an enviable record as a business woman in the northwestern country where she is widely and well known. Her large herd of Anexiety 4th cattle, some seven hundred in number, are said to be the finest in the country by experienced cattle men who are breeders themselves. Mrs. Braddock had the honor of having the first show herd of this kind of cattle exhibited at a National Stock Show, from Dawes county and the county boasts that it has more pure bred white faces than in any territory of its size in the United States. Mrs. Braddock exhibited at the Denver Cattle Show of January, 1921, where she won a premium on every animal exhibited. This in competition with veteran breeders who have been showing cattle for many years, a rather unusual honor for a woman. When asked by a friend, "Mrs. Braddock, were you not surprised?" She replied, "No, this was not thought out or accomplished in a day. Many months of careful watching of the development of different individuals are necessary in the selection of a show animal, and I have made an intensive study of the various types of beef cattle for several years. Right now I am planning and preparing for the 1922 shows."
Mrs. Braddock is a woman of high culture and refinement as she has studied these many years in spite of the trials and hardships she endured on the ranch in the early days. She has two cultured daughters, Gladys Enid, who after graduating from the Chadron State Normal School, in Chadron attended the Nebraska State University, at Lincoln and is now attending the University of Chicago, and Wilma Doris, who is in the ninth grade of the normal school at Chadron. Mrs. Braddock has a beautiful home in Chadron and now lives surrounded by all the luxuries and comforts that wealth and culture can afford but she says that wealth is not all in life to live for and is desirous of assisting in the farther development and improvement of Dawes county where she has played an important part in stock raising and agriculture. She stands high in the community respected by her business associates and loved by the many old friends. Few women have been able to take up such a large business enterprise and make the success that she has.

Julia Anna Jacobson Braddock was born March 10, 1879, on a farm near Navada, Iowa, the daughter of John H. and Theodore (Tow) Jacobson. Her parents moved in her early childhood, to Sheridan county, Nebraska. Here the family passed through the thrilling experiences which come to pioneers who lived in the land of the Sioux Indians. Bands of Indians often came to Rushville, the settlement near the home of the Jacobsons. Mrs. Braddock says the most vivid recollection of her childhood is of a visit of Sioux Indians to their home, wearing feathers and beads with their faces painted and streaked. The squaws rode on ponies and each had her papoose in a basket swinging from a pole which dragged beneath the pony. In the first years in which they lived in Nebraska there were few schools, but a few log school houses were built on the prairies and here she received her
first schooling, going a little later to attend the public school in Rushville. She taught school several years. On March 28, 1899, she was married to William Braddock of Chadron, Nebraska, which town is their home. The have two daughters, Gladys Enid, born April 24, 1900, and Wilma Doris, Born Feb. 10, 1906. They spent the first eight years of their married life on a ranch eighteen miles north of Chadron. The Chadron Woman's Club was organized in Mrs. Braddock's home, and she has been every since on of its active workers, serving two years as president. She is a member of the Chadron Culture Club, the oldest club in the town. She is a member of the board of Education and a commissioner on the board of the County Fair and has an active interest in all work for the betterment of the community.

A biographical sketch of Adna's son Horace says:
Mr. Barmore is the offspring of a good family, his father having been Adna, and his mother Abigail Dart, natives of Genessee Co, NY, where they were reared and married. They resided there afterward for a time, and then removed to Cattaraugus Co, where they lived for a period of twenty years. In 1844 they removed to LaPorte County, IN, and thence in 1847, to Berrien Co, MI, where they spent the remainder of their lives, the father dying in 1876 at the age of 74 years and the mother in 1883, aged 82.

The available information fits this description fairly well, except for the year of Adna's death.

The Portrait and Biographical Album of Gage County, Nebraska (1888), pp. 321-22, contains a biographical sketch of Horance and describes his early life in Cattaraugus County, New York: "His home being among the timber regions, the schools were few and far between, he having to travel one and one-half miles to the temple off learning to secure the rudiments of his education: While in Michigan, Horace worked making potash and farming.
Not long after his marriage to Mary Irene Curtiss in Oct 1859, Horace, his father-in-law, William Curtiss, and his brother-in-law Austin Curtiss, left for the Pikes Peak gold rush. a letter of William dated 29 Aug 1860 indicates that Hoace left a few days earlier to return to Michigan. He also states that a letter that Mary had written to Hoace in June had arrived after he left for home. At the time Horace left they had not made enough money to cover the expenses of coming. Austin must have left sometime in November judging by a 6 Jan 1861 letter of William. Another letter of William Curtiss dated 19 Sep 1861, indicates that he plans to leave the gold country late in the season and hopes to be home by Christmas or New Year's.
On his way home from Pikes Peak, William was impressed by the land in the vicinity of the Nemaha River in eastern Nebraska and decided to obtain land under the new Homstead Act in that area. He obtained patent No. 14, signed by Abraham Lincoln, to land 16 miles below where he crossed the Nemaha, near the later town of Adams in Gage County. A letter to his wife dated 24 Nov 1862 indicates that William has just arrived at Nebraska City on his way to see his land. By that time, Horace and Mary had decided to remove to Nebraska. William planted crops on his land in the spring of 1863. Sometime in the summer, his wife and daughter Harriet joined him by taking the railroad from Chicago to St. Joseph, a steamboat from St. Joseph to Nebraska City, and by wagon the 40 miles to Adams. Horace and Mary came by wagon with their two oldest children that fall, leaving Berrien on 28 Oct and arriving in Nebrask in Dec 1863.
Hoace homestaded in Section 33 near Adams. The sketch of Frank Barmore says that at one time Horace "was engaged in freighting across the plains from Nebraska City to Fort Kearney." This is possible, since, in the spring of 1863, William Curtiss said that he had been considering hauling to the mountains, but had decided not to do so. Frank's obituary states that he and his brother Will, "much earlier than most boys, shouldered a large share of man's work and responsibility, because of a lame father, who was unable to follow a team or do many of the other tasks on a farm." If this is so, Horace"s injury must have occurred after his arrival in Nebraska since he seems to have been in good health at that time.
The 1885 Nebraska agricultural census described Horace"s farm as consisting of 117 acres of tilled ground, 53 acres in pastures and orchards, and 20 acres in woodland. The value of the farm was considered to be $5700, with implements valued at $100, livestock at $900, and fences and buildings at $80. Horace paid a value of $75 for farm labor in 1884 (including board). The estimated value of his 1884 farm production was $600. He had 7 horses, 6 milch cows, 7 other cattle, 6 calvesduring 1884 (he sold 2 cows in 1884), 46 swine and 56 poultry. In 1884 he had 105 acres of Indian corn, producing 3000 bushels, 10 acres of oats, producing 300 bushels, 1.5 acres of sorghum, 3 acres of apples producing 50 bushels and a half acre of potatoes, producing 80 bushels. Horace cut 20 cords of wood during 1884 with a value of $80. The 1888 sketch of Horace states that among the improvements "around their homesead is a fine orchard of 100 apple trees in good bearing condition and a grove of cottonwood trees."
The sketch also describes the interests of Horace and Mary: The warm friends of temperance, they have labored for its advancement many years, and are members in good standing of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Barmore politically is a progressive Republican, but on account of the cause of temperance is now identified with the Prohibitionists. He has been School Treasurer in his district for the long period of twenty years. He voted for the adoption the the State Constitution, and has served on the Petit Jury.
Horace and Mary left their farm and moed into Adams in the spring of 1889. When Horace died in 1893 his estate included a half interest in lots 5 & 6 in block 9 in Adams, lots 1,2, & 3 in block 15 of Sterling in Johnson County, one imported stallion (Victor) and a horse stable.

The biographical sketch of Horace describes the life of Mary prior to her marriage: Mrs. B. was born at Barcelona, Chautauqua Co, New York on the shores of Lake Erie, ....She pursued her first studies in the excellent schools of Westfield, in her native county, but when a little girl ten years of age they removed to Indiana. The mother then being incapacitated for the continuing the charge of the household, this duty fell upon her daughter Mary, and the studies of the latter thereafter were pursued at home by the light of the evening lamp after the duties of the day were over. So thorough, however, had been the previous training of the child, that with the assistance and encouragement of her father, she made good headway, and a few years later taught in the district schools of LaParte County.

Born in Athens County, Ohio, where he grew up. He graduated from the
Zanesville Academy and became a teacher in the area. Married Clarinda Young of
Mushingum County in 1855.

In the early spring of 1862 (perhaps this was 1860 because one record shows
that a child, Melinda, was born in Adams, Nebraska in June of 1860, and the
next daughter, Rachel, was born in Adams in September of 1861), Silas and
Clarinda, with their three small children, (who would have been, Lucretia,
Douglas and William.) boarded a flat boat on the Ohio River at Marietta to
travel to Nebraska, (which was not yet a State). It took several days to
reach the Junction of the Ohio and the Mississippi River at Cairo, Illinois.

The Family transferred to a River-Steamer, heading North. They tranferred at
St. Louis to a River Packet, a small river Vessel. Fours days later, the Packet
docked at Brownsville, Nebraska, where a friend driving a Ox team and Wagon,
had waited for them for two days. The next Day, the family loaded into the
wagon and traveled to Gage Co., where they settled into a crude one room log
Cabin.

The Homestead Act, later made land available to Settlers and Silas home-
steaded on the upper part of the Big Nemaha.
He taught in the first School in Adams and also in different schools in the
area for 30 years.
His "Obituary" (The Adams Globe) published 18 Nov. 1915, states that --
"Father Bryson" died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Horrum,
(Sarah Ann Bryson), in Adams, at the good old age of 80 years, 4 months,
and 20 days. It is needless to say that his presence will be greatly missed
and by all that knew him, his memory will remain a benediction. We feel we
can say of "Father Bryson", as of Paul of old, "He has fought a good fight;
he has finished his course; he has kept the faith; and hencerforth, there is
laid up for him a crown of Righteousness which Christ, the righteous Judge,
shall give".

He was buried at "Highland Cemetery", Adam, Gage Co. Neb.
