MORTIMER of Sandford Devon and Eastbourne Sussex

Journal by diymort

I have traced the MORTIMER line of the family back to C.1560, James, John and Nicholas MORTIMER of Sandford Devon.
Other Mortimers existed nearby, at Bowe where John Mortimer was bailiff to the Earl of Devon circa 1560.
Later descendants lived Eastbourne and London and became successful merchants, solicitors, and circa 1880 liked to show the Mortimer Coat of Arms on their properties. John Hamilton Mortimer A.R.A , Eastbourne, successful artist 1740-1779 has been claimed in GARRARD publication on this site to be part of that family tree, although it's proven (College of Arms info) that his line came from Robert Mortimer bc1598 -1658 who married Anne Wheatley and lived Friston.
Who knows though, perhaps there was a link further back- I have info that both lines believed they descended from Roger IV Earl of March.
Would like to hear from people linked to this MORTIMER family
from Devon/Sussex area, as we are registered with FamilyTreeDNA site. For list of Names researched on home page :

Later family descendants' names are located Queensland and Victoria Australia.
