PJ010 on 2010-05-17 17:06:46As I understand it, William Sylvester Johnson senior was born in New York State. He married Katherine (Cathrene) Miller (born 1805 in Buffalo, NY) in 1825?she is understood to be Pennsylvania Dutch. It is likely that they lived at least for a time in Steuben or Cattaraugus County, where their son Sylvester was born. Trouble is, I?ve not been able to trace them. There is only one white William Johnson of the correct age listed as a head of household in Steuben, Cattaraugus and Allegany counties in the 1830 U.S. federal census. This is a William Johnson of Greenwood Township, Steuben County, who is recorded as having one boy and one girl each under the age of five, two men and one woman each aged between 25 and 30, living in his household. A William Johnson was justice of the peace in Greenwood Township in 1831. In about 1838 or 1839 he disappeared and it was presumed that he went west with the Mormons, who were moving at that time.
His children:
1. Kate.
2. (William) Sylvester, born 19th November 1836. He is my g-g-grandfather.
3. George. Lived in Erie, PA.

krumerill on 2013-05-07 00:32:13see "https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M4DK-HR8". This is a record from the 1850 Mackford, Marquette, Wisonsin census. Sylvester Johnson age 59 is married to Catharine age 55. W. S. Johnson, age 14 and Sylvia Ann Johnson age 16 were born in NY.
Sylvester is enumerated in the 1855 Mackford WI Census and the 1860 Eau Claire WI census. Sylvia Ann married Sam Rumery and is my g.g.grandmother.
PJ010 on 2013-05-07 16:40:07Thanks for your posting. This is intriguing. The dates, if not all the names, look a good match and this is worth exploring further. What can I add? Not much. Some correspondence received by my great-aunt in 1964 indicates:
(1) Catherine (Miller) Johnson married (William) Sylvester Johnson in 1825.
(2) In 1852 she married George Washington Young, a farmer in Allegheny, Venango County, PA. Whether there is a record of divorce or not, I am not aware.
(3) In 1864 they moved to Appleton City, St. Claire Co., MO.
(4) She later died of pneumonia in Grant County, SD, some time after the death of her son Sylvester, who died on 16 November 1889.
I suppose some early land records from Mackford, WI, or probate records from Eau Claire, might help to shed some light. Do let me know if you have any further information about Sylvia which may help to connect the dots.
