There are some people here also looking for Lawtons in New Zealand - mostly immigrants from County Cork

- in Westport in 1889 a David Stead Lawton tried to kill his wife. He was given sleeping draughts and morphia to calm him down and the combination actually killed him - the verdict was he died from disease of the brain intensified by excitement ...

Hi thanks to both allcat and ngairedith. you have in 2 postings given me more info than i had ie i did not even know who might be who in terms of lawtons but it se
ems from this my grandfather has to be

1877-1931 - Frank aged 54
Frank LAWTON son of Joseph Lawton of Wellington married Matilda May COLEY daughter of Henry Coley of Foxton in 1900

because 1931is the date he was drowned on the ship the Progress so i now have his birth date and he also I know my Dad was born in foxton

I assume then too that this person

Captain) Frank LAWTON married Mary Jane LOVELL in 1874
- in 1899 he was fined for acting as a pilot on a sailing vessel from Wellington to Auckland without having a license
- Frank died in 1906

is likely to be my greatgrandfather
as his first name is Frank and he was also on a vessel and it seems that sailing a vessel with out pilots licence seems something our family would do ie he would be very competent/skilled but not just done the paper work. its not scientific but its certainly plausible

many thanks again

Hi frank,
You say that Frank LAWTON son of Joseph Lawton of Wellington who married Matilda May COLEY, daughter of Henry Coley of Foxton in 1900, is likely your grandfather

This then means that Captain Frank Lawton is NOT your great grandfather because a Joseph Lawton must be
- (or the Captain MAY be your great grandfather but then the first statement is not correct)

However, you say that your dad was born in Foxton, so, the known children of Frank Lawton & Matilda May Coley were:
- (there were possibly more)

1901-1956 Cecil Wilfred Lawton
- he died aged 55
- he was cremated at Karori Crematorium Wellington

1903-1976 Gladys Gwendoline Lawton
- she married Horace William Prince in 1930
- she died aged 73

1905-1986 Reginald Dundas Lawton
- he died aged 81

1907-? Violet Olive Lawton
- she married Leslie Charles Whinham in 1928
- she may have remarried

the Iron Steamer PROGRESS was built at Port Chalmers in 1882
On 1 May 1931 she was blown on to the rocks while un-manoeuvrable through breaking her tailshaft and losing her propeller. Her recovery was botched by the Wellington Harbour tugs. Four crew drowned.
Scattered pieces of iron litter the area, most unrecognisable apart from the boiler and engine
... The wrecked ship, Progress, in Ohiro Bay, Wellington

Your grandfather Frank Lawton was the Chief Mate on that steamer in 1931 and one of the crew that was drowned
- he is buried in Karori Cemetery Wellington
- Plot 121 L - Section CH ENG2
- he was 53 (birth year of 1878)

Just for your research as there may be a connection somewhere, here are the children of (Captain) Frank Lawton & Mary Jane Lovell:

1875-1953 Rose Lawton
- she married Edward NICHOLAS in 1897
- she died aged 78

1876-1931 Frank Lawton
- he died aged 54

1877-1915 Claude Herbert Lawton
- he died aged 37

1879-1947 Charles Thomas Lawton
- married Harriett Elizabeth Spencer in 1905
- he died aged 67

1881-1883 Violet Mary Lawton
- she died aged 2

1882-1883 Lily Jane Lawton
- she died aged 10 months

1883-1971 Ethel Lawton
- she married Ernest George Featonby in 1905
- she died aged 89

1884-? May Lawton
- she married Archibald Lusk Speirs in 1894

1886- Maude Alice Lawton
- she POSSIBLY married Ernest Mark Minifie in 1905

1888-? Daisy Lawton
- she married Alfred Allen Wilton in 1906

1889-1889 Margaret Lawton
- she died aged 2 months

1890-1891 Eva Florence Lawton
- she died aged 6 months

1892-1957 William Henry Lawton
- he married Ruth Elizabeth Bennett in 1916
- he died aged 65

1893-1941 Cecil John Lawton
- he married Lillian Ethel Daisy Noot in 1919
- he died aged 47

1895-1895 Ruby Lawton
- she died aged 3 weeks

1897-1912 Roy Lawton
- he died aged 14

hi ngairedith,

yes i see what you mean. what is odd though is that Captain Frank Lawton as above had a son Frank birth- death dates with 1876-1931 so it is very close to the 1877 to 1931 reported for Frank being son of Joseph. Found the joseph in a newspaper article about Frank ( my grandfathers wedding) saying he was the son of joseph lawton. maybe Captain Frank and "Joseph" are one and the same. the joseph is odd since in those days may sons took their fathers name so Frank to Frank is more likely then Joseph to Frank. Nothing is simly eh?
many thnaks
Frank
