Where is the best place to trace beyond a dead end at Ellis?

Question by JGumber

A German speaking family apparently (Source was old and memory not clear) that emigrated from Somewhere in German (Schwarzwald?) to Hungary in the 1850s or so, leaving all Birth & Death Records from a town that has apparently belonged to Romania for many years, in Hungarian. The Immigration papers from Ellis all report Hungarian data. But I know from experience that the family has always claimed to be German. I'm Stuck. Oh, due to the German/Magyar thing going on we are not even sure of the proper spelling of our surname. Many Documents bear either Gumber or Gumper and sometimes both on the same document. Gives me a Headache.
