May 1938 PARTY AT WAIMATA. Last Saturday evening Mr and Mrs Gambirazzi invited a number of friends to their home at Waimata Valley to a birthday party given in honour of their daughter, Miss Joan Gambirazzi and her friend, Miss Flo Holter. The guests enjoyed a jolly evening playing games and competitions and singing and dancing in a large room loaned by Mrs Scott. The winners of one competition were Mrs J. Scott and Mr S. Scott, while the latter was successful in another contest, for which the lady's prize was won by Miss Gambirazzi. During the evening items played on the piano-accordian by Mr Les Hollis were much appreciated. At supper-time the guests adjourned to the dining-room, where a dainty supper was served, a large birthday cake taking pride of place on the table.
The dining-room was prettily decorated with gold and yellow chrysanthemums intermingled with maidenhair fern. Mrs Gambirazzi received her guests wearing a blue floral crepe-de-chine frock. Miss Joan Gambirazzi chose a smart frock of floral georgette. A black satin frock with a floral velvet coatee to tone was worn by Miss Flo Holter.

Gambirazzi, Waimata Valley, was married to Stephen Keogh, third son of Mr and Mrs W. Horton, Hastings. The ceremony was performed by the Rev Father J. W. McMahon. The bride, who was escorted by her father, wore a model frock of powder blue georgette cut on slender lines. Shirring accented the bodice at the shoulders and the neckline was V-shaped. White accessories were worn and the bride's only ornament was a string of pearls. She carried an exquisite bouquet of pink sweet peas and carnations, intermingled with maidenhair fern. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Lloma Gambirazzi, wearing a frock of hydrangea blue moss crepe. The bodice was shirred diagonally and the flowing skirt fitted closely at the hops. Accessories to tone and a bouquet composed of pink carnations, combined with delicate greenery completed the ensemble. Mr William Holter carried out the duties of best man.
Leaving the church, the bride was presented with a silver horseshoe, the traditional emblem of good luck, by her youngest sister. After the ceremony a number of guests were entertained at a delightful reception at Le Grande Lounge.
Mrs Gambirazzi, mother of the bride was wearing a frock of navy blue floral crepe de chine, with matching accessories. She carried a posy of red and cream carnations, intermingled with greenery.
Miss Doreen Gambirazzi, sister of the bride, wore a frock of moss green linen and a hat to tone.
An array of charming wedding presents were received by the bride and bridegroom, who are making their future home in Napier. The bridegroom's gift to the bride was a double string of Richelieu pearls and to the bridesmaid a gold initialled signet ring.

Walter and son Jack in an accident
Dec 1929 CAR GOES OVER BANK - Accident at Waimea. Serious head injuries were sustained by a roadman, Walter Gambirazzi, in an accident at Waimata Valley late yesterday afternoon, when a car went over the bank and as a result the injured man was admitted to the Cook Hospital last evening. The driver of the car, Valentine Bayne, another roadman, was unhurt. It appears that Mr Bayne drove Mr Gambirazzi and his son, Jack Gambirazzi, down the road at Waimata to fetch some horses from the vicinity of Mr M. B. Mander's homestead and on the return journey Mr Gambirazzi jun., drove the horses, while his father and Mr Bayne followed behind in the car. On the way the car had to cross a low bridge and it was necessary for the driver to change down into second gear to negotiate the steep rise at the farther end of the structure. At this point the road was very narrow and while Mr Bayne was changing gears the car ran off the road and over the bank into the creek. As the car went over the bank Mr Gambirazzi was thrown out and sustained injuries to his back and serious injuries to his head. Mr Bayne was unhurt and he and another man brought Mr Gambirazzi into town for medical attention, the doctor ordering his removal to hospital.

death of their mother Harriett
Gisborne Herald, 31 March 1941 The death of Mrs Harriet Annie Gambirazzi at the Cook Hospital on Saturday night removes on who has lived in the Waimata Valley for the past 26 years and who, during that time, took a prominent part in social activities. Mrs Gambirazzi, who was born in Auckland 47 years ago, married Mr W. J. Gambirazzi in Gisborne and has lived in the Waimata Valley ever since. She took much interest in the Women's Institute and Women's Division of the Farmers' Union. Her death occurred after an illness extending over six months. She is survived by her husband, one son and four daughters, to whom much sympathy will be extended, The son, John, is with the New Zealand forces in Egypt. The daughters are Mrs F. K. Horton, Napier, Mrs G. Sands, Auckland and the Misses D. and L. Gambirazzi, Waimata.

Hi there, Nellie and William are my great grandparents. I have a few dates that may be of use to you: Nellie died 30 January 1929(according to my Grandmothers/her daughters records) William's date is correct at 26 December '42. Edward John Thomas Holter died 29 June 1939 and he was their fourth and last born child. Their other children are : William Henry Holter born at Gisborne 12 November 1913, Constance Sarah Holter born at Gisborne 16 September 1915(my Grandmother) Florence May Holter born at Ohakune 19 May 1920 and Edward John Thomas Holter born at Raupo 23 November 1921. William Henry Holter died 15 June 1992, and Constance Sarah Holter(then Manson) died 5 January 1995. Both Nellie and Edward unfortunately have unmarked graves, and the cemetary has sadly been left to fall apart over the years.
I hope this is of some help to you.
Yours faithfully
Marion Treloar

by ngairedith on 2012-02-09 06:42:34

I am researching ALL Holter in NZ and have found half a dozen of them having been in NZ over the last couple hundred years !!! which makes me think that when they entered it must have been under another name, maybe Holt or some other similar spelling

by janilye on 2012-02-09 06:58:07

maybe they came from this bloke;
Lars Amundsen Holter
Birth 1697 in Holter Oppstun, Nannestad, Akershus, Norway
Death Living
Death 1768 in Algarheim Ullensaker, Akershus, Norway

by janilye on 2012-02-09 07:05:07

plenty in Norway, maybe they came with the whalers

by janilye on 2012-02-09 07:27:51

The first ones that went to Maryland in the US in 1750 were from Norway.
About the same time a group also went to Westham, Sussex. I think they were all on the move because of the threatened war with Sweden. I would guess that your nz Holter's came from Sussex.
