Ebenezer John White was my GGgrandfather. He died on 15 Aug 1894 in Queensland. During the 1880s he is recorded as living in Christchurch NZ, occupation brewer. Martha Chew died in 1907, again in Queensland. Frederick George White married Louisa Amelia Thwaites and had 8 children. I suspect Naomi White remained in England with her grandparents (Thomas White & Anne Cooper) eventually marrying William Trotter Robertson. My G grandfather Albert Henry White married Ellen Elizabeth Kaye, had 5 children all born in Queensland then emmigrated to NZ settling in Christchurch. He abandoned his family around 1911, eventually dying in Queensland in 1940. Ellen Elizabeth Kaye died in Christchurch in 1913.
I would be interested in any information on the White or Kaye families and their descendants.

Hello atwood, and thank you for the extra information. Much appreciated.

When I have some spare time I will do a few more record searches and update.

Hope there are other members able to assist you with more details on the WHITE and KAYE lines in New Zealand. Fingers crossed.

Hi,
Thanks for your prompt reply. I have the White / Kaye line in NZ since 1911 well sorted. I'm seeking assistance with those that remained in Australia as they may have a photo of Ellen Elizabeth Kaye (1861 - 1913).

I'm currently writing the history of the breweries of Victoria. Ebenezer John White is one brewer whose story I've been following with great interest. He went from insolvency to insolvency and had some terrible tragedies occur at times, but I believe he was a good brewer. I am trying to sort out the string of places (there were many and some were quite large) he owned and worked at. I'd be very keen to get in touch and exchange information on him. I'd especially love to get a photo if one exists.

Here?s what I have on Ebenezer John White. The bits in square brackets have been included since I saw Tonkin?s (thanks!!) family time line tying together the Chew and White families.
Until July 1853 EJW and his father, Thomas, were involved in a grocery business Hartley-row Southampton. [EJW and his wife Martha, (n?e Chew) and their four children came to Melbourne on the ?Launceston? in 1853. I need to verfy date.] By March 1854 EJW was running the Collingwood Tea and Coffee Warehouse in Brunswick-street at the corner Hanover-street, Fitzroy. He was insolvent in January the following year. Later that year Thomas Chew was running the Collingwood Brewery, which was subsequently taken over by EJW and Arthur Lester in 1856. White may have been involved earlier as Thomas Chew is his father-in-law. White remained there until 1860 when he was again insolvent. [There is a possibility he brewed for George Vear at Brighton for a few months in 1857, as his son was born there, but I have yet to substantiate this.] Naomi Chew married Albert Sprigg at White?s Collingwood Brewery in 1859. EJW was involved at the White Horse Brewery in Collingwood and the Golden City Brewery in Fitzroy in quick succession although I don?t know in what order. Chew bought the brewery in Fitzroy late in 1860 so I?m now thinking that?s when EJW was there. In 1861 He was again insolvent at Richmond, although I have yet to find out at which brewery. In January 1862 he was looking for employment, advertising that he was late of White and Co., brewers, Collingwood. By 1865 he was in partnership at the Cremorne Brewery in Richmond. This is where Edgar (his son) drowned in the cellar. The firm was in trouble in mid 1867 and the following year EJW was at the Melbourne Brewery in West Melbourne where he yet again filed for insolvency (1868). He managed to hold onto the brewery by taking a partner. He shifted to the Flagstaff Brewery in 1871 and the following year was seeking a job citing his 16 years Melbourne experience. From here I lose track to some extent. I believe he may have got the job as the first brewer at the Castlemaine Brewery in South Melbourne, which was opened late in 1872, but can?t prove it as yet. He had moved to New Zealand by 1876 and was still there in 1885 [thanks Atwood]. (There was an Ebenezer John White who bought the Colonial Tannery at South Creek in NSW in October 1882 and went bankrupt in December. It is possible he came back to Australia for a time). Around 1890 EJW was involved at the Lion Brewery at Spring Hill in Brisbane. On 15 August 1895 EJW died at the age of 71 and was noted as being an old colonist. Any other information would be greatly appreciated ? especially a photo!

Thank you Abail4.

I'm glad these few details were of some use to you.

Sounds like an interesting research project you have going and I wish you luck with your research, and hope someone can assist you with a few photos.

Keep at it.

Cheers.
