I am searching for help in finding where my ancestor John McCoy/McCay originated from in Ireland

Journal by Luckycharm65

I have traced my McCoy family tree back to John McCoy/McCay, who lived in Maryland up until 1783. I have a copy of his will and his wife's will. I think John came from Ulster, Ireland and believe he is and Ulster(Scotch Irish). I would appreciate help if you can.

A lot of Mccoy,s are to be found in Ireland.John is a very popular name within the family of Mccoy,s.I am a Mccoy who lives in Ireland, have researched for my family tree in my own County and have found a John in nearly every Generation.Just trying to give you a sense of how big your search could be.

Yes, He was a Cooper and his wife's name was Esther Beaty/Betty -(how it is spelled in her fathers will). Esther's father Walter was a blacksmith and John and Esther named their son Ezekiel Beaty McCoy after another Beaty/Betty family member named Ezekiel. John also had a brother he mentions in his will named Robert, who I have no more information on at this time.

sorry, but i could not find anything on your john mccoy/mccay.here in ireland we are handicapped to the extent that the majority of our records in the national archives in dublin were destroyed in a fire in the 1920s.also,b.m.d.records for catholics did not have to be offically recorded until 1864.all other faiths about 1845.although a good few parish records go back a lot further than these dates.it is a pity you did not know what county he was from.good luck with your search.

Thank you for your time and effort. I took a DNA test and I am not sure, but, I think the McCoys I am searching for may be from Great Britain. Perhaps they migrated there at some point in the past? I need someone more familiar with DNA to help me confirm either way.
On another note, the family legend on my mothers side is that my maternal gr-gr-grandfather was from Ireland and descended from a Baron Bruchs that helped Sir William Wallace.Sounds like it will still be difficult to find out if that family legend is true also.

A good chance your McCoys are, like mine, from Northern Ireland but originally emigrated from Scotland. Some of the McCoys came to Ireland in the 16th and 17th century with the plantation of Ulster.Others are where i am descended from,Gallowglasses or Mercenaries.Professional soldiers brought over from Scotland from the latter part of the 13th century onwards by chieftains in Ireland to fight their cause.Unlike today standing armies did not exist. It would have been foolish and a waste of money to keep a group of men in times of peace.
