looking for CULLEN of Brisbane

Query by Peckham

I am looking for descendants of James and Agnes Cullen of Australia. James was born in Chapelhall on 10/08/1855 and died in Australia on02/08/1939 ages 83 years. His wife Agnes (nee Anderson) was born, possibly in Kilmarnock in around 1853/54, and died in Australia on 04/09/1932 aged about 78 years. Their daughter Margaret married my Grandfather, James Rose MacGillivray on 29/06/1900 in Hamilton, Scotland. I believe James and Agnes, with children William (age 21) and Mary (age 18) sailed to Brisbane, Australia in August 1911 on board the Torilla.
Any information would be very much appreciated.

There are Macgillivray's in Victoria. If you can check the Melbourne or Victorian Phone books.

Hi,

Records indicate that the Torilla arrived in Brisbane from London on October 10th 1911 and from a manifest the following Cullen family members were on board.

James Cullen, 54 born Scotland about 1857.
Agnes Cullen, 56 born Scotland about 1855.
William Cullen, 21 born Scotland about 1890.
Mary Cullen, 19 born Scotland about 1893.

I see in the 1901 Scotland Census James 45 and Agnes 46 along with 5 children James, 21, John 16, Robert 12, William 9 and mary 6 were residing at Rockside, Burnblea st Hamilton, Lanarkshire Scotland. James was a collery fireman.

Appears that the three eldest sons, James, John & Robert didn't come to Australia!

When James arrived in Queensland it looks like he went to Ipswich which was a coal mining are and used his skills he had in Scotland to become a Miners deputy.

Some electoral Roll info.

1913
Queensland, Moreton, Ipswich.
Cullen James, Gibbon St, Miners deputy.
Cullen Agnes, Gibbon St, home duties.

1919
Queensland, Moreton, Ipswich.
Cullen James, Gibbon st, miners deputy.
Cullen Agnes, Gibbon St, home duties.

1925
Queensland, Moreton, Ipswich.
Cullen James, Rockside, Gibbon st Ipswich, miners deputy.
Cullen Agnes, Rockside, Gibbon St, home duties.

1936
Queensland, Moreton, Ipswich.
Cullen James, Rockside, Gibbon st Ipswich, miners deputy.

Looks like James and Agnes named their house 'rockside" after the place they resided at in Scotland (see 1901 census info)

Regards

Gerry

New to Familytree circles.

Also on board the Torilla were Elizabeth Martin and (we believe) her son John Martin aged 6. Elizabeth was the daughter of James and Agnes Cullen and widow of Patrick William Robertson Martin (born 11 November 1870 in Hamilton). Patrick was brother of my grandfather. Patrick and Elizabeth were married at her family home Rockside, Burnblea Street, Hamilton on 1st June 1899.

They had a child James died February 1900 aged three weeks and we think a second child John born about 1905. Patrick died 9th May 1906 in Saltcoats, Scotland.

After going to Australia Elizabeth remarried James Scott and her death is recorded at Ipswich Queensland 9th March 1946

We are particularly interested in finding out what happened to John Martin - following mother's remarriage may have changed name to Scott

Hope this of interest
