Hi ngairedith. I have already posted a msg on your Peck of Taita Tree, but just in case you didn't see it, here it is:
Date 10 Apr 2015
Name Roger Watkin
Comments I am the great great nephew of Daniel Watkin who is listed with his family in your `tree`. I have the birth, marriage and death dates of most of the members of his issue, if anyone wants it. Where does Daniel fit into the `Peck of Taita` tree? cheers, Roger
Now here is a brief reply to this old message on FTC ....
I am related to all but Eunice, Roy & Robina. My recent research has revealed the following:
Daniel & Emma Watkin emigrated to NZ from Shropshire in 1881 on the SS Garonne. They settled in Taranaki and added seven more kids to the two children that came with them from England. They were the parents of numbers 2,3, 6,7,10 & 11. Harold (1877-1902) and Abigail (1879-1935) came with them, and Myra (1890-1984) are the only three names not on your list.
Of the others, Alfred Edward Watkin may be one of two people. One man of that name married Hilda Elsie (1884-1975) who was Daniel’s daughter. Another Alfred Edward Watkin was the 12 year old son of Daniel’s elder brother John, who had emigrated in 1880 to Stratford, Taranaki. I am pretty sure they can’t be the same man! There’s a record of Alfred Watkin marrying two ladies called Walters in 1893 (Elizabeth, who died in 1894) and 1897 (Alice); John’s son maybe?
Nos. 2 and 11 (Alma & Rupert) were twins.
I found a photo of the wedding of No. 3. - Watkin, Berness Netta (b.1886) - in the New Plymouth museum a couple of weeks ago. In it were her parents, Daniel & Emma, plus 7 of her 8 siblings (the only one missing was brother Harold, who had died in a forestry accident six years previously). Alfred Edward Watkin is in the photo with his wife Hilda, and their two children.
Daniel & John’s brother Arthur Rogers Watkin is my great grandfather. He died in 1920 and is buried in the Te Henui cemetery in New Plymouth.
Daniel’s son Jasper was killed in an accident involving a horse in 1933, and his son Jasper Gordon Watkin died in Italy in 1944, at the Battle of Monte Cassino.
Any more info needed?
thank you Roger
wonderful amount of information
