Many thanks for your info on Joshua Flynn in the 1841 census. It is my family but I am now looking for records of Joshua's birth. The place of birth recorded in the census is nonexistent and I have no idea of his parentage at this stage. I appreciate your interest.
Kind regards
Sonia

Try this site it has a list of Parishes and contacts for information they may be able to help you.

The parish could be Talland, the Census collector may have written what he thought he heard.

I tried running your information through http://www.findmypast.co.uk without any luck. Unfortunately, one of the problems that I have found on is that sometimes a middle name was used on the census instead of the first name. Or even a different last name then the birth name.

I believe that I was able to locate one of the children though. If you are able to get the birth records, that might give you at least the maiden name of the mother. From there you might be able to locate a marriage certificate. The marriage certificate can give you the parents of Josiah.

Believe me, I know all about having to go about the search in really convoluted ways in order to get what I need.

Here is the BMD info on the child I was able to locate.

Name: FLYNN, Mary Ann
Registration District: Portsea Island
County: Hampshire
Year of Registration: 1838
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Mother's Maiden Name: Not available before 1911 Q3
Volume No: 7
Page No: 128

Good luck!

Thank you for you very helpful information. That is his daughter's birth registration so I will follow up on the marriage certificate.
